The most popular
cave in this area, and the only one open to the public is Ngilgi
Cave, with its striking display of stalagmite, stalactite, helictite and shawl formations. The name acknowledges Australian Aboriginal mythology, as Ngilgi was a good spirit who triumphed in battle against an evil spirit Wolgine. The story is part of the
heritage of the Wardandi people, who are the traditional custodians of the
cave and the wider south west region. You can learn more about the mythology and stories on a tour of the
cave with indigenous tour company Koomal Dreaming, or alternatively, take a self-guided tour.
European discovery occurred in 1899, with the
cave formerly being known as
Yallingup Cave.
The Semi-Guided Show
Cave Tour is approximately one-hour duration, and begins with an introductory talk from the
cave guide while being led down into the first chamber or ‘The
Amphitheatre’. Visitors can then explore at their own pace, while another guide stationed in the centre of the
cave can answer questions and provide more information on the many beautiful areas within the
cave.
Ngilgi
Cave also offers ‘Adventure Tour’ options – giving thrill-seekers the opportunity to take a hard-hat and lamp and venture off the boardwalks – for a two, or two-and-half-hour adventure, led by an experienced guide.
