The LOL
Grey Tree was one of many trees in the South West that was had a
fire tower hut built at its top in 1930.
This particular tree was a powerderbark tree and was "rediscovered" and the firehut
lookout rebuilt by foresters Jack Bradshaw and Roger Underwood in the mid-1980s.
Picnic tables and barbecue facilities are provided. Visitors can also take two walk trails, Lol Gray Trail and Lol Gray Loop that leave from this area.
Lol Gray Trail
The Lol Gray Trail is a return walk to the Lol Gray
picnic area. The main features are the diversity of the vegetation types, the old Lol Gray
fire tower and spectacular
views over Dryandra. The Lol Gray Tree
fire tower was built in 1930 and used by the Forest Department as a
lookout for the early detection of fires. The trail also runs past the site of the Lol Gray School. Although no buildings exist, the foundations can still be seen.
Distance: 12.5 km Class: Medium Time: Allow 4 hours
Lol Gray Loop
To take the Lol Gray Loop, follow the old telegraph line from the Lol Gray
picnic area. The walk features heath vegetation where pygmy possums and honeyeaters find the flowers irresistible.
