Yuendumu is located on
the Tanami track. It is one of the largest Aboriginal communities in central Australia with around 1000 Warlpiri people.
This region is known worldwide for producing some of the finest Aboriginal artists such as Judy
Watson Napangardi and Dorothy Robinson Napangardi. Yuendumu is also known famously in the art world for the Yuendumu school doors which were created by senior men with the intention for Warlpiri kids to continue having a strong link with their culture. In 1995 a series of these doors was acquired South Australian Museum and were restored. the
PAW Media (formerly Warlpiri Media) create the TV production 'Bush Mechanics' and also 'Aboriginal Rules' which explored the social meaning of football in remote communities. An exhibit in the Australian Museum (in
Canberra) currently highlights props used in the Bush Mechanics production.
Yuendumu is mentioned in the Midnight Oil song Beds are Burning ("4 wheels scare the cockatoos, from
Kintore East to Yuendumu - (not "yonder blues', which some people mistakenly think is being sung).
Yuendumu Community Store has supplies for visitors and locals focussing on fresh fruit and vegetables and is
well worth visiting. Fresh food, cooked chicken, and fuel
services.
