Am heading to Undarra in a couple of days from
Normanton. Considering staying at Mt Surprise and doing a tour from there. Is that the best way to go abot it??
Constructive comments would be appreciated.

Hi Terry, you can
camp at Undarra itself, nice enough spot. Can't help with Mt Surprise. Cheers, Kanga.

Hi Terry
We stayed at both Mnt Surprise and Undara a week or 2 ago. Bedrock Village Caravan Park at Mnt Surprise was awesome. Staff friendly, shady sites, clean and nice amenities and most nights thy have some sort of campfire entertainment. Also, the little cafe is staffed by some pretty handy bakers/pastry chefs (if that sort of thing takes your fancy). We did gem
fossicking from Mnt Surprise. We did the lava tubes tour from Staying at Undara itself. Ok spot but much bigger than Mnt Surprise and the staff less friendly. A more commercial atmosphere. Anyway, that's my two cents worth. Hope you enjoy the trip whichever combination of stays and tours you do!!
Cheers
Teh

Terry, I would stay at Undarra as it has a great restaurant and facilities.
Don't do the full day tour as you see different tubes than the half day. The first part of the full day is a tour of a Volcanoe and you can do this yourself and at your own place. Particually if you have children. Take lunch to the volcanoe as there is a great picnic spot.
At Undarra there are also great walks particually to the top of the local
hill for sunset. There is another to the local swamp and this is great for birds and kangaroos.
Get in early if having dinner in the restaruant as it get busy and you can get a great table on the edge, right next to the bush.

Agree.
Also, when we were there last year we were allowed to have campfires at our van sites.

HI Terry '
It's been a many years since we stayed at Undara, but we did enjoy it.
Camp fire at our site, almost resort facilities , and each night there was a different activity eg - presentation/night walk/ Star Gazing etc., conduted free of charge by the Savanagh Guides.
Can't comment on Mt Suprise, but will probaly spend some time there ourselves next time and do a bit of
fossicking.
Enjoy
Cheers

Make sure you call in advance to get a site as we were there about 6 weeks ago and rang on the day and got the last site, it was packed. Still very enjoyable but can be very popular so book Undara tour with site booking. We witnessed at least 5 groups turned away from powered site and the unpowered area was full also.

Terry,
Definately stay in the Bedrock C/van Park at Mount Suprise. Undara is now to tourist orientated.
Bedrock go to an "exclusive" site where only two other tour operators are allowed. The tube are great. They also take you to the top of opne of the extinct volcanoes. Morning tea and lunch are supplied.
Three photos attached.

Bedrock Village is great - we thought it a much nicer base than Undara. Joe, at Bedrock, used to be a Savanna Guide at Undara, so he knows it
well. Apart from their Undara tour, they may be running one to
Cobbold Gorge - worth doing.

The manager of Bedrock park does tours to Undara. You can hop on his tour there or hop on at Undara and pay Undaras mark up as
well. Why
camp at Undara and pay extra?

Whatever you do, DON'T stay at the other caravan park in Mt Surprise, as we had two bad experiences there, once last year and twice the year before. Never again!
The same bloke owns the
BP servo, the pub and the caravan park and is in cahoots with the local copper.

Thanks everyone. Did the lava tube tour today and am staying at Undara tonight.
Tour was great. Undarra is very busy so if you are coming make sure you book. Powered site $30 which is not too bad.

Bedrock is only $27 - for a better park. You would have done the same tour from there cheaper (as I reported earlier.)
