Hi Steadylenny

You could go to Mulga Park via the road heading west from near the SA/NT border south of Kulgera then north to near Curtin Springs, but it is a long cut rather than a short cut. The Old Gunbarrel is in WA.

The original Gunbarrel Highway is the Mulga Park road from Stuart Highway via Mulga Park to Amata, Wingelina and Warakurna. The road is on the APY lands and is not open to travelers.

Please don't shoot the messenger, I am just letting you know the answer to your question

The Mulga Park Road is part of the APY lands (Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara).

The statutory functions of the APY are:
(a) to ascertain the wishes and opinions of traditional owners in relation to the management, use and control of the lands and to seek, where practicable, to give effect to those wishes and opinions;
(b) to protect the interests of traditional owners in relation to the management, use and control of the lands; and
(c) to negotiate with persons desiring to use, occupy or gain access to any part of the lands;
(d) to administer land vested in Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara.

Any person not having business in one of the communities in the area, is a traveler as far as APY is concerned. Permits are only available to those who have legitimate business in the area.

I draw your attention to the Oz Explorer Treks section ,
The name of this trek is Finke to Uluru via old gun barrel
Nowhere on the track notes does it mention restricted access or prmits required !
Have you any other info available on this trek?

Thanks

Steady,

Sorry I cannot find that trek in the trek notes. I have no knowledge of what someone posted in the trek notes, nor details of that trek. I do however have extensive knowledge of the APY lands and other lands and permit structures.

I was in my above post referring to comments about where the Old Gunbarrell Highway is and isn't. History has been re-written somewhat to protect the landholders, and many peiple are unaware that the original GBH is now what is referred to as the Mulga Park Road.

While most of that road would not be on a route from Finke to Yulara, a section of it could be included, and that section is accessible to the general public.

The only sections that you are allowed to travel are

1. from the Stuart Highway to Mulga park. From there you could then travel north to the Lasseter Highway as someone has already pointed out above, and on to Yulara.

2. From Warrakurna to Wingellina if you wish to visit Surveyor Generals Corner and have made appropriate arrangements.

Thanks for the info , I think your description is very accurate ,
I will use the track in a couple of weeks when we go to the Finke Desert Race to avoid driving back up to the Hugh river stock route , we will need a bit more of a detailed map i guess but I think it sounds like the way to go.

Any suggestions on maps,

As for the grumpy pills , it pisses me off when we all get told " No access " No fires " no entry " Rah Rah Rah " its too much politics & not enough stand up from us ( The 2nd traditional owners of the land ) .
Bloody National parks , Traditional land owners & money hungry Station owners that want you to use the front gate so they can charge an entry fee for everything.
Even the bloody cheeky pricks out at the Uluru gate who charge an entry fee to get in the park and then tell you that the rock is closed due to wind , rain , heat , cold , sun , no sun , moon , no moon , we should all stamp out this beuracratic rubbish and get together as a voice & get our country back the way it was.
For Example : No entry signs at stanley chasam , ripped it out and used it for a ladder to get up the gorge to the good stuff.
No Fires signs are good kindling as are the no firewood collecting signs & No camping signs are also good for starting fires , Just need to sit down wind because they are Treated Pine and can effect your health.
All of the above actions are ways that we can re claim our natural parks for our use and not just for the Yar Yars & tea toataling bush walkers.

Another thing that really gets up my goat is the way the national parks people think we all like to walk 1000m + to see any of our landmarks , so they put up fenses & railings arround the carparks to keep you back and make you walk everywhere.
Example is Dalhousie springs , what a Joke of a place that is .
In the good old days it was a nice treed camping area with natural settings & camping right up near the billabong.
Now for no other reason its a bleep hole with ugly fences & cables everywhere so you camp in a caravan park type setting & need to walk 1/2 KM to get into the water.

Now thats why I am Grumpy.!
Cheers

I understand all of the above better than you probably imagine, but as I said, don't shoot the messenger. Imagine what it is like for a tour company, we have less freedom than the average citizen, but most of us do more to educate the average citizen about care for the wilderness than the Parks who charge us more than the average citizen, for the privilege of being told where we can't go.

By way of example. captain Billy's landing on Cape York, been going there since 1970's before it was National Park and when it took 4 hours with a chainsaw to get there. Blokes like me in the 1970s and 80's kept that place going as an attraction and told many others about it and how to care for it.

Now Parks charge me a squillion every year for a Commercial Operators License, tell me I can't camp at Fruit Bat Falls or many other places, I can camp at Capt Billy (thanks). On top of the license fee, I get charge a per person part day or full day access fee- Joe Citizen doesn't, and I get charged the camping fee, and if I was silly enough to not pay, I'd cop a $3000 fine.

So I turn up at Capt Billy one year, been staying there every year a couple of times per year and been about the only ones there, but now thanks to the internet, there are 25 vans and campers and about 60 people there. The toilet can handle 15 per day.

When I arrive, the Ranger is there, we knew that anyway because he overtook our convoy on the way in. Poor bugger is dealing with the overflowing toilet. Now I have nothing against the rangers, just the system.

I say G'day to him and point out that all the fireplaces are full, "can i place a fire on the concrete slab if I clean up afterwards?" I ask.

"Sure" he says obligingly.

I begin setting up, but all my convoy are still up at the lookout taking photos. The crowd in the campground has seen us arrive. Three big burly blokes walk up, posturing threateningly. "What are you doing?" one of them asks.

"Setting up camp" I reply.

"How many of you are there?" he asks

" Seven vehicles"

"Bloody hell! You blokes come in here and think you can take over the joint" he says angrily?

" What? Mate I am minding my own business setting up my camp, I think it is you who thinks he owns the joint" I reply.

I then go on to explain the economics, how we pay a fortune to be told where we can't camp. I say " All you have to pay is the camping fee of $4.50 a night, and looks to me like you've been here a week, bet you haven't even paid that"

He walked away.

The Ranger comes up to me does the usual license check and other things- any breach can cost me my license and a heap of money. I ask if he has checked the fee box, He says he has and despite there being about 60 people in the camp, there is not even ONE dollar in the box!

I could go on...much more happened afterwards.

You want change?- write to every politician you can.

i'm hearing you ,
What ever happened to the good old days ,

I have written to the councils , Government , DSE , CLC etc Never ever had a reply as I dont think the pollies have ever been bush , nor do we want them !

The only way to keep it real is to get a strong numbered group together such as the members of this forum to band together and re claim the bush.
Teach people to ignore the signs , Fences & saftey barriers. ( within reason)
Enjoy the whole out doors not just the snipets they ( Government) leave accesible whilst locking away the good stuff.

I may even get a face book page happening so people can join a group called "Enoughs Enough" or similar and members can post photos & ideas of people doing whatever it is they can to help change the way the government policy has effected our fredom.

Now back to work!

While I appreciate the sentiment, ignoring signs and safety barriers will not succeed in getting what you want. Better to fist get tort law reform in Australia- such as in NZ. Because until tort reform happens, everyone is scared of being sued. That my friend is the entire key to it. Tort Law reform
