I just rang Campbelltown Nissan to buy a new gasket for the lid of the airfilter box. It's a piece of 6mm square foam that seals the lid to the base when you change your airfilter. I noticed it had a small piece missing when i changed the airfilter last weekend. Its not important if you dont go into water as the airfilter element has a seal top and bottom to seal the airbox base and the lid and if a little air gets sucked into the box via the broken gasket, it doesnt matter because it still has to go past the filter but if you go into deep water( with a
snorkel), there is a chance water will get in via
the gap in the gasket. It possibley wouldnt be a great amount of water but not worth the risk if a simple gasket fixes the problem.. The gasket is not available on its own and comes with the complete lid assembly $195 + GST.... Anyone had this problem and is the same gasket available on any other Nissan Models with the same airbox?? Maybe a Navara or Pathfinder.... regards Michael

I just fixed and thanks to the guys who suggested Clark Rubber, its the obvious place to go with a great range of products. They have a 6mm dia sponge cord and 6x6mm square. I had some loctite 406 Super glue and there you have it. length is 690mm for the gasket. My main grievance is you cant just walk in and buy a gasket from a company who is supposed to support their product.. I would suggest to everyone who has
snorkel on a Patrol to
check this gasket, its not waterproof fro water crossings if a piece has fallen out like
mine did. The old gasket was brittle and worn. Michael
Thanks to all who replied!!

Well I had a simular thing with a missing clip on my GU air cleaner box. Nissan wanted $220 for a complete unit, dont sell the 20cent clips, which made me look harder in the motor which I found Yep Pee!! we always pay extra in WA

Apparently the clips are exactly the same on some Navaras and are sold seperately, thats why i initially asked about the gasket on other models.. MIchael

Bloody rip off!! The first thing that came to my mind was wether you could go to a hardware
shop. They sell foam weather seals made by Raven and proberly some other brands that you use to seal your doors at
home. They come in different sizes and come with a self adheasive back for ease of fitment. They come in about 5mtr lengths so you would have left over for next time. Not sure if it would work, but just a thought and at proberly $180.00+ cheaper it's worth a thought. Good luck!!

What's the problem. Put a dob of silasic on the missing bit, cover with glad wrap & replace the lid for a perfect seal. If you want to get carried away I'm sure Clark Rubber would have 6mm square on a roll for $10 a metre to replace the whole thing.
Cheers Craig......................

Craig! Its not that i cant get around the problem , its the fact that for a part that will obviously fall apart eventually, you cant buy without half the box. If it was a Holden part $10 would fix the problem and would be available. Thats the issue. The way the lid is moulded, the chances of it failing would be almost nill so why not just stock the gasket.. Absolutely no logic in the thinking. You cant blame the japanese, it would be the fools in Nissan here i would think!! Michael

Well no actually. I had the same problem on my 2001 Jackaroo. The gasket is not a seperate tiem - you have to buy the whole box.

An Aussie made holden, not many aussie made parts on them. Most of the rubber parts come from Asia. The Cruze has 30 ish % Aussie content.

I don’t think it’s limited to Nissan Michael. Some of the Toyotas parts prices are just outrageous!. Try nizzbits (nizzbits@hotmail.com). I always found them great for genuine parts at much better prices. They have a wsebsite now as
well.
My other suggestion would be head to Clarke Rubber. They have a huge range of foam and neoprene tapes of all dimensions. I’ve made up a couple of gaskets that way,. From memory the gasket you’re referring to sits inside a plastic channel so fairly easy the thread in.
Good luck. Mick

Yep Top centre brake light was leaking on my 100 ser $288 for a new one with the seal on it No you cant buy a seal on its own.
Solution Clarke rubber sold me a 50mm wide piece of foam for about $4.
Cleaned up assembly cut foam to shape and stuck it on put some silicone on the car part and pushed it on Problem solved.
Take your lid in and get some stripping the same Easy fix.

Thats a factor in both why I did buy a new Nissan and made sure it was petrol Micheal.
Specifically they have a higher proportion of simpler more basic and fixable components , including ,in the case of the GU over ten years of the same common bits , spares , wrecker sources etc.
E.G. Windscreens - $75 fuel pumps and $9 spark plugs - whereas my next choice - 200 series -
well , you have read before about injectors, complexity of changing a starter etc.
On top of that is a generally lesser requirement of bits on a car with no known generic issues.

I don’t understand the logic of buying a older vehicle because its simpler and has cheaper parts.
Given a choice most would go for modern technology and performance.
Otherwise we'd all be driving T Model Fords

Not old Dennis - just older simpler technology - and you can buy it new today.
Thinking of live axles coils , no-turbos, complex fuel pumps , low pressure fuel rails , no press button start etc

The following is a thoughtful opinion on the topic, and not a rant or rave and not meant to change anyone else's point of view....
Depends where you want to travel Dennis.... I have a GQ Patrol, burnt the alternator out on the QAA line, but was able to drive to
Birdsville to get replaced. Whilst there I spoke with a fellow who had a later model car, with a computer on board, he had alternator issues and the computer would not allow the car to start. So he had to be towed to the mechanic. Imagine if he had have had to be towed from the dog fence..... woulda cost a motza I reckon.
My theory is that while ever there's a chance I will travel that far "outback", I will do it in an un-computerized" car......... If my adventures become restricted to urban environments, then I'll consider a more modern car.
Cheers
Brian

My old man was a real old bushy and hated cars that didn't have crank handles.
How far do you take it?

I used a bit of High Density sticky-back foam that I had layin' about at the time;-)
It has so far outlasted the original by a factor of at least 3 :)
I'm told that screen door spline rubber works very
well also....
Catch ya later... Ed

Hi Michael,
Trust me it's not Nissan.
Recently when I was getting my 100 series cleaned at the local car wash I noticed that the small mat hook that stops the floor mats from moving was missing. Just a 20c part I thought. Wrong! Mr Toyota won't sell just the plastic hook - you have to but the entire set of carpets to get the hook @ $95.00 - No thanks!
Then the small air vent slide adjuster clip broke. Again not more than a 20c plastic part. Can you but one. Not on your Nelly! Mr Toyota will only sell you the entire air vent assembly at $495.00!
What a unmitigated rip off!
Ah - I feel so much better now after airing that!

I suppose you only have to look at a front Commodore mudguard for about $150 compare to a Honda at $1000..... where is the value in imported car parts?

It's not only motor vehicle air filter parts that are expensive, I replaced a foam rubber filter on a late model Victa Mower a couple of weeks back and the price was rediculous as
well.
