Could anyone currently using a LC200 diesel as a caravan tug (say 2.5 to 3 tonnes full height van) let me know what fuel consumption you are getting and at what speed? I am getting reports mostly of around 18 LHK at 90, but someone is suggesting around 30 LHK which sounds a bit over the top to say the least.

I get around 18 - 20 litres per 100k towing 3t with a diesel 200series GXL have had it go higher pushing into headwind and lower when wind behind. It only gets up around 30+ when dragging the weight up a range.
Usually sit about 90-100kph
Petrol might be a lot worse. I don't know.

There is lots of data on lcool. 30 l/100k is very very abnormal.
17 - 20 seems typical at 100k ish.
Mine gets 16 - 17 towing 1.5 ton.

Hi Terry,
I tow a full height van with a LC200 V8 GXL.
Towing weight would be around 2.8 tonnes and I am averaging around 18-19 LHK with a bit higher into head wind. Towing speed is normally just under 100kph.

Hi Terry. My brother has a 24ft van weighing 3.5tonne and has towed it around 50000km so far. His average is 22 l/100k with the worst around 25l/100k into a headwind on the Nullabour. Not sure of his average travelling speed but think he sticks to the limits. It is a 2007 Sahara 200 and has clocked up 70000km all told. Bob.

As a comparison, I tow a 1.2 - 1.5T
camp trailer with a Holden Adventra AWD V8 (5.7 chev) and use between between 16 - 17 L per 100k, sticking to the speed limit.
On a recent trip with a mate who was towing his 1.8T van with a TD Prado (2005) he also was using 17L per 100k. He said he was using 4th a fair bit when coming to hills or heading into the wind.
The Adventra sits on 100k at about 1950rpm.

Just knocked over 60,000km in the last 12 months. For about 40,000 towing about 1900kg at 95-100ks per hour I average 17.8 L/100k. Not loaded I get 12.5L/100k at the same speed. As always, once you go over 100kph or more the fuel use rises considerably. My worst has been 24L/100k between
Gundagai and Gilgandra - driving hard and a head wind. The best figures towing are reached using sport mode in 4th and only shifting into 5th when above 90kph. This seems to allow the torque converter lock up to be effective and the engine revs lock to the road speed.

The thing with the Adventra is that at 17L per 100k towing, that is actually better fuel economy than we get out of it around town unloaded, usually 18 - 19L per 100. LOL, so the economy actually impressed us to be honest i was expecting 20+ L per 100 with the CT attached.
On a trip down the free way is uses 12L per 100 averaging about 13.5 for a tip over the mountains from
Bathurst to
Sydney return.

G'day Terry
Last year I towed my 2 ton tandem axle caravan with my 200 through western NSW, Western Qld up to NT and back down the Centre, 10,000 kms in total and I averaged 17-18 litres/100kms. I left the gear box in automatic and travelled between 90-100kmh, leaving the tacho always under 2,000 revs. The 200 handled it perfectly, I didn't know it was on the back even. However, on the way back down the Centre I struck some heavy head wind and going up some of the steep hills I dropped back to between 22-23 litres/100kms. Overall on the flat country out west, if you keep between 90 and 100kms, most of us are getting about 18 litres/100kms. By leaving it in automatic it never slipped in to top (6th) gear and mainly stayed in 5th gear touring. A lot of the blokes actually lock theirs into 5th gear but I found there was no need to.
Happy travelling mate
Regards
The Major

The Owners' Manual recommends towing in S5.
