Hi guys,
In case you missed Outback Fight Club on SBS last night, here is the linkOutback fight club

In this episode, Fred Brophy's troup head to Birdsville for the races. It shows the races as being a washout, so I'm guessing this was filmed last year.

Shows some great footage of the rains. Hope the link works for you, if not, go to the SBS website and click on Podcasts.... the thumbnail for the video is on the right hand side of screen.

Enjoy!

Fab.

I have been in that tent 3 times now, but only as a spectator.
I enjoyed watching it.

Thanks for the link.

I remember Roy Bell's Boxing Troupe at the Loxton Show when I was a young fella growing up in the Mallee in the 50's, the big bass drums at either end of the platform and old Roy whistling then 'Hold 'er there boys', we've got a contender', as some silly local bugger put his hand up and challenged one of the troupe. Went into the tent and saw Roy telling the 'fighters' whose turn it was to win.
Fast forward to 1990 at Birdsville and there was Fred Brophy doing the same. Woo hoo, put me hand up to go against an old bloke called 'Mandrake', 3 rounds and $30 if I won, done deal. I thought I was OK, Hell, I had boxed as a young bloke and even stood my ground in the Army, what could go wrong?
Trouble is there was a young local bloke who had challenged one of the troupe's boxers ahead of me, just as he was to go on his Dad turned up and pulled him out, that left me sitting there all gloved up and ready to go, bugger!
Danced around for about 3 seconds until he lobbed a punch on me gob and I ended up laying on the 1st two rows of the spectators.
End result after 2 rounds, me giving up, a bottom lip sticking out about 3 inches, 4 cracked ribs.
Remember reading or seeing, years later, that 'Mandrake' had never been beaten anyway.

Makes my eyes water now after all this time, lol.

Cheers,
