Have done the coastal route form Perth to Broome about 3 years ago, absolutely loved it.

Looking at taking the inland route for a 9 day trip (2 days up, 5 days in and 2 days down) and was wondering if there was any way to skip having to head back to the coast to Port Hedland around Nullagine / Marble Bar that may save an hour or two and also add some excitement in some gravel tracks to the trip? Or would the decreased speed on the gravel tracks, if any, negate it?

Cheers,

Jason.

According to TravelMate the shortest/most direct (not necessarily the quickest ) is via Meekatharra, Newman, Port Hedland. Just over 2000 km. But as Broome is on the coast it's going to be hard to dodge it.

have look at the track north of Nullagine that goes to Shay Gap and comes out near Pardoo Road House. Its all dirt and has some speccy scenery.

A 4Wd is recommended however. There may be some washout and there may at times be water in the creeks.

Hi Jason

I would suggest incorporating Newman to Nullagine to Marble Bar, then north towards Shay Gap on the Boreline Road, which meets the highway around 43 kms east of Pardoo for one way. I don't you'll find the dirt roads exciting as such and shouldn't slow you down much, but the scenery is lovely. Once you hit the highway there is no option but duplicate the way to and from Broome. Even going both ways on the inland route with one way via Port Hedland (roads can be varied once you get into the wheat belt), it is not only shorter than the coastal road which you have already seen, but much more interesting and varied scenery. Regardless, doing it in two days sounds rather ambitious. Check out Plan a Trip on goseeaustralia.com.au to compare distances and suggested driving times.

Do a check on the Newman to Nullagine road as it was in bad condition last I heard. Nullagine to Marble Bar wasnt too bad when I travelled it about a month ago...nothing flash but ok.

The fastest way from Perth to Broome would be by plane at 32000 ft. LOL

So Marble Bar Road (from Newman to the Great Northern Highway) does have parts that are gravel?

Originally we were planning on taking our Commodore sedan up instead of the Patrol, but the wife is a bit concerned about taking the Commodore if we're going on gravel (understandably).

Looks like we may just stay on the Great Northern and go via Port Hedland after all!

And I agree that two days up/back is going to be a bit of a b1tch, and flying would be faster, wheres the fun in flying? For us it's 80% the journey and 20% the destination, plus we flew up in November last year, but when we did the drive for our honeymoon in 2007, it allowed us more time to bond and spend quality time with each other :)

Hi Jason

I think trying to do the trip in 2 days would be no second honeymoon! Not much sightseeing either. You'd have to drive in shifts and drive outside of daylight hours - the latter being something i would never do in the north west, and be driving under tension due to trying to meet deadlines. Not my idea of enjoyment or quality time together.

We live in Broome and have done most routes to Perth.
In a Commodore you can comfortably get to Newman in 10-11hrs and then the same the next day will see you in Broome before dark.
If you take the Patrol and take the Boreline you can save a couple of hours driving and the fuel cost will balance out.
Taking the Boreline Rd I comfortable reach Meeka from Broome during daylight.

Hi Tamery,

Many thanks for your reply. Could I ask if you would be so kind as to drop me an email to uneekwahn [at] gmail [dot] com so we can discuss this route a bit further?

Cheers,

Jason.
