This natural gap in the range through which the road is built was probably originally named "Shea Pass", so named after Mr Robert Shea of Shea and Miller who were pearlers that recruited aboriginal people from this area to work on pearling expeditions.
It is a spectacular range and driving through the pass is highly recommended as there are not many vistas quite like it.
