We are traveling via the WA Gold Fields in the next two weeks and I was interested in the condition of the
Menzies to
Sandstone road.
That is, is it a "good" dirt road and what condition is it currently in?
Cheers Jeff

Couple of years ago Jeff, and we can't remember the condition of the road, which means that it was not 'remarkable' one way or the other.
Certainly 2 lanes.......
Don't forget to call into
Lake Ballard art project on the way past and the info place in
Menzies.
Cheers,
Peter

Hi Jeff,
Did the section from
Menzies to the
Lake Ballard sculpture site in 08, then looped south via
Rowles Lagoon,
Ora Banda and back on the Highway at Broad Arrow. From memory it was a good gravel road all the way and with some interesting things to see. As above the sculpture site is worth seeing - there is a photo (titled modern art) of part of it in our photo comp blog. You need to walk out onto the lake to really "appreciate" it!
Cheers

I was up there in November and went from McKenzie to
Lake Ballard and continued on the same gravel road to
Leonora.
Road was pretty good but
Lake Ballard was too wet to walk out too far.
We were doing 90 or so on parts of it. (The road that is)
All the gravel roads in the area seemed Ok.
From
Leonora to
Kookynie had a closed sign but was actually open and was being repaired in
places after washouts.
Have a look at Gwalia a wonderfully kept
old mine town, now a
Heritage listed spot.
You can still read the original newspapers used for wallpaper on
the hut walls.
Great mining museum as
well

Grab the Golden Quest Guidebook - worth it just for the 2 cd's with stories of the beginnings of the Goldfields. Just watch out for rain - the gravel roads are good until they get wet! Cheers Heather

Thanks to those who replied, I assumed the road was no worse than the
Oodnadatta track etc i.e. good if it hasn't rained, but just wanted an idea, not sure yet if we will go that way, it is time dependent and need to do Kalgoorlie to Mt Magnet in the one day, this way looks/is significantly shorter but may be slower than sticking to the blacktop via
Leonora.
