Rowles Lagoon is freshwater wetland in the Goldfields Region reserved for nature conservation. The lake and wetlands may appear very different depending on the seasons. During drought they can totally dry out, but then fill again to overflowing during seasons of heavy rain. Rowles Lagoon relies on rainfall run-off to maintain its depth and when full offers excellent opportunities for water based
recreation and wetlands studies.
Over 40 species of water birds can be found here and 6 species of waterbird actually breed at
the lagoon, the most noted being the Brown Freckled Duck. Other species include the
Grey Plover, Black-tailed Godwit, Ruddy Turnstone, Whistling Kite, Little Eagle, Peregrine Falcon and Spotted Harrier. See the conservation park site listing.
When the water level is high enough, take a swim or explore the lake on your canoe. To respect the birds and tranquility of the reserve, motorised vessels and water skiing are not permitted.
The old boiler in
the lagoon was once used to pump water to the Carbine
Mine.
Camping is free. See details about camping in the nearby place list.
