Hilux 3.0 (non-turbo) Chip Dyno test

Well a few weeks ago I asked about increasing the power and maybe torque and getting some fuel consumption benefit of my naturally aspirated 3.0 diesel dual cab hilux.

I didn't want to go the expensive route of a turbo looking at up to $4k from enquiries round brisbane.

Headers and extractors are about $1k but no confirmed reports of a significant increase.

So I went shopping for a chip cause I had the EFI motor and got close to buying a DP or a Tunit but found someone next suburb who was fitting the morepower chip and said they'd get the same result but lower down.

It was a you drive, then he installs, and then you drive again, and if you like it you pay for it and if you don't you only wear the installation fee.

I took if for the drive after, into second and my head hit the headrest - was a I dreaming ? Now this is no rocket ship and never will be but I was not expecting the new pull of the second gear.

So paid for it, fingers crossed I was not my own victim of expectation.

Northside Carburettors in Geebung did the dyno test, didn't know him, yellow pages job, but cool super friendly young guy in a large shed with a zillion carbies on one wall and a dyno tuner. Would recommend him to anyone. Cost $90, too cheap I wished I had paid him more. If you got a carby problem go there.

What I noticed during the test - without the chip some black smoke near redline. With the chip it billowed black smoke a lot more near redline, can only think over fuelling, but I almost never go near redline so I don't care. Maybe off to some "cost effective maintenance" stuff, they are a only few suburbs away.

The combined dyno chart is below, I compare this to the one on the DP site for the 5LE, and which is more expensive. The DP seems to give the max Kw increase at 90km/hr, and a constant what looks like almost not noticeable torque increase.

The morepower chip seems to give me the equivalent of the DP peak but at around 1800rpm, but bugger all up at highway speeds (my eyes could be deceiving me in the comparison).

The torque curve seems the same but gives me about a 10.7% (to my eye) torque improvement and at the 1800rpm range. Was hard for me to compare this to the DP dyno test so any help there welcome.

Am I happy? Sort of, there is a difference to the driving. And I do most of my off road stuff rambling along trails and beaches and sand roads in about the 1800 - 2000rpm, so fantastic result for those types of driving. If I were towing or mainly on highways, maybe the DP is the way to go.

Next will be headers and there I'll stop and be happy with what I got.

Any comment welcome and if anyone can interpret the figures for me into percentages that would be really good. I am no expert at dyno charts. Too early for any fuel consumption test. The DP talks about a 12.5% improvement, but I reckon it's only at that highway speed.

I am enjoying the change to that 1500 to 2500rpm driving range which is where I most seem to be (except on the highway). And now any stretch of road I am on and where I can't see a traffic light I drop into 5th straight away and it holds really really well at 60-70km/hr, hills and all.

And one last thing, the guy selling these in brissie is an ex radio technician and sells lots of hiclones. I gave him my opinion of the hiclones, not high and I have had one, and well, each to his own. It turns out hiclone are the company importing these units from the UK. I'm happy about that, so long as Hiclone was not making them ... Cost - $1,100.00.

I forgot to say I am in Brisbane, so Northside Carby's is in Geebung in Brisbane. I asked him for a metric test but he only had the imperial measurements.

You can see the rise in the graph around the 2000/2200 mark which is obviously where most of the torque is. I had the 2.8D as I said to you before and I virtually never took myn over 3g as I found you werent gaining anything and just revving the crapper out of it for no reason. Like yourself most of my gear changes in general were around the 2, 2 1/2g mark. would only go to 3 when was climbing a hill and just hold it there till was up over the top. As long as your happy with it and it performs like you want it to then that is the main thing. I didnt think it would have the claims of working the same as a turbo like he first told you but any increase in power is a bonus with out the complications of an after market turbo overheating etc which seems to be common on the hilux's with an after market turbo. (never hear of issues on the factory turbo's) I think you will find a difference with the exhaust. I did, not a lot but noticable more so when pulling then outrite flat out speed. Regards Steve

Keep a eye on the soot build up in the oil. You may want to do oil/filter changer every 5000 k

Porl, I would draw the line somewhere before this project gets out of hand. Chip sounds good and maybe the exhaust, but without the Turbo you are extremely limited and gains will be minimal. You can chase your tail with this sort of stuff, if you really need a more powerful rig, then trade this one in and buy one, $$$ allowing off course.

Whilst it's fun to do if you are realistic etc, diesel engines are simple, they need fuel and air, you are supplying more fuel with the chip but not the air.

Lastly the Dyno Dynamics figures are a great confirmation of the chip's results, I would not recommend a whole new exhaust, but perhaps some nice headers if you can get them. It is also very affordable to have the headers High Performance Coated which will add value to your rig when time comes to sell.

I think I've previously gotten quotes for the entire system, didn't realise I could just put on a header system. I thought if you put in a header you need to upgrade the rest of the system to get out the extra gasses it pulls out of the engine. I'll see what they say but feel free to correct my assumption, am sure someone told me that, but probably someone trying to sell me a full system ...

You can put headers on without the exhaust, but most of the back pressure is in the muffler so you will not get the full benifit. In fact if watching pennies I would just put a sports exhaust on. Last diesel I had it made it 10% guicker over the crest of my test hill.

i put a turbo on my 1hz about a year ago ( 30 000km since) and i can say it turned a good car into a nice car. better to drive , cleaner oil, very noticeable horsepower. i did an oil analysis before i put the turbo on ,and about 5 samples after i put the turbo on. all the ones after the turbo came back saying' no noticeable contaminants' , but before the turbo there was 'excess fuel 'and 'high carbon'. i'm happy.

Good to hear you are happy with it and it does improve the vehicles performance.

Extractors and an exhaust will make a difference, try and find an exhaust place that understands exhaust design.

Bigger is not always better.

Has this guy got a web site.

Yeah i know, hiclone hiclone hiclone is plugged there, but I don't buy it and I didn't.

I think now after the dyno test the chip is good value compared to what is around if it suits your driving style. I checked the US sites for a cheaper one but could only find ones for CRD engines, mine's the dinosaur with the Denso fuel pump. Though hopefully having an older engine on the cusp of the new technologies might mean it may be suitable for alternative diesel fuels one day.

I will feel a bit more comfortable going round Indian Head on Fraser Is now.

And yes, just got last night a quote for a genie performance header for $360 installed. I've asked his opinion do I need to upgrade the entire exhaust but you know, and I ain't no expert, the factory spec exhaust has got to be set up for the max torque and Kw - but I'll almost never be there, I want the low down grunt, so I would expect after the performance header, I don't think I'd need to replace the rest as it should be able to let out the gasses as it won't be anywhere near top torque and spec.

Overall, the addition of the genie header (extractor), takes the whole set up to just over the cost of the DP so i gotta be happy with that, and still saving $2,540 on a turbo - which I don't argue would give me commensurate more performance, it's just I didn't want to go that way as said above, it's a little bit over investment for my wagon given my budget.
