We intend to travel around Australia in June towing a camper trailer. I am looking for a protection screen for the back window that when rocks bounce up and off the campertrailer and hit the back window it is protected. It would be made of a clear rubber or plastic material and stick on the window with suction caps. Does anybody know where I can get one for a Pathfinder or one size fits all model?????

That doesn't sound too bad Michael, I was talked into getting 3mm by the local glass dealer. Would like to know what you may use to hold the polycarbonate in place please. Do you use velcro?

Gday John, No not velcro, suction cups, It really depends on the type of cup you use, i drilled 11mm holes from memory, just big enough to push the back of the cup through and the ones i purchased have an undercut and i push a stainless steel "c" circlip into the front of the poly carb.. $70 total.. GU both doors.. Michael

I have been looking into this as well.

I am looking at a product from Altrex ( www.altrex.com.au)

I have no idea how good they are but they responded to a query the next day - better than most so worth a look.

Apparently Autopro stock it ($130)

Prior/still considering the suction cup idea but am having trouble finding them or at least ones that will hold.

Richard

Richard, I dont know where you are but i bought mine from a place in Revesby NSW, Gee, cant think of their name, They sell craft glass bits and pieces, they use them to stick glass things to house windows, so are pretty good.., i just take the metal clip that comes with them and replace with a 7mm s/s circlip... Perrrrfect.. Michael

Michael,
forgot ask what size are the cups. I have been looking for 45-50 mm (which look like those)

I rang one place in SA a 4wd shop and they wanted $2-3, so I am keeping on looking.

Richard, i used abut 15 and for the wiper side, i placed the middle one on the glass and not through the poly carb so i can use the wiper. If you have a problem, let me know, i can source them and the clips for cost.. Easy.. Michael..

Richard, forgot to mention, if you make yourself or want to convert the velcro screen savers to suction cups you must use a negative rake twist drill or at the very least and blunt drill, to drill Polycarbonate, yes it may be bullet proof but it can grab and tear if you use a sharp drill.... test on an offcut if you make your own, Michael

Good product Craig but $200. Probably ok if you cant make yourself but i cant see the value. But having said that, It could cost up to a grand depending on you make and model to replace the back window.. Because it would be classed as a slow moving part, the price could be horendous.. GEE!!! sound cheap now!! Michael

Craig, I bought two of those square plastic mats (without the holes) from clark rubber with jigsaw edges so that you can join them up together plus about 500 mm of 50mm wide velcro sticky tape which I cut into squares, stuck one to the mat, one in each corner and the opposite to the rear windows( troopy has two)....I was able then to place or remove the protection as I needed to....when you apply them to the rear windows, the centre meshes up so you end up with full protection.....when I stop and need to get into the back, I only have to remove the left hand side one...I travelled the GCR to Alice then up to Kakadu...then across to GRR and back down the coast with no problems at all while towing a pioneer camper trailer....The mats measure 620x620x12mm

Craig,

It really is quite easy to make up your own from bits and pieces sourced at Bunnings or similar.

I found this thread by Moggs (who I think posts here as well??)

Home made rear window guard

I made some for the 105 and they work great. No problems...total cost about $100. Polycarbonate was about $70 and I needed 3 packets of the "dual lock fasteners" and they are $10 each (ouch) but worth it and half the price of commercial ones.

Cheers,

Mark

It is a good idear to try and prevent the stones from
hitting the back of your
4wd all together,use good
mud flaps or some other deflection device as well.
I had my rear window covered but the paint and body work
got a hammering and cracked tail lights even a rock
through the vinyl spare tyre cover.
I only ever made one mistake
and that's when I thought I was wrong!

Craig I just bought a rear window saver from Mike at Obies Outback Products. Easy to order $200 delivered up to Qld for me.http://www.obiesoutback.com.au
You could make one ourself if your rear window is flat but if not don't bother more hassel that its worth.

Good Luck Derek

I cut some of that clear plastic you find on awnings on your patio.
It's quite heavy. Just taped it with grey gaffer tape and used eucalyptus oil to get rid of the marks afterward.
Went up to Birdsville and out to Lawn Hill and whilst I had plenty of stones ( including one as big as my fist) sitting on the spare tyre there was no damage done. Cost about 5 bucks!

Bunnings sell flat laser lite sheeting same as you use for your patio etc but FLAT.

It is only about 1.5mm think but fitted with suction cups will be fine.
