My Camps Australia III says there is a
free camp at
Combo Waterhole. Turn South off highway 16KM E of Kyuna, then 7 KM of dirt road.
As you might know
Combo Waterhole is where the swaggie in Waltzing Matilda was supposed to have drowned himself.
The Qld EPA site says it is a
nature reserve and campiing is strictly forbidden.
Anyone know the facts on the
camp site and how to find it? I guess the site they refer to (if it still exists) is outside the
nature reserve. We will be heading from the East (from
Winton), so the instruction '16KM E of Kyuna is only slightly helpful.
Thanks,
Norm C

Caamping . Bugger. Perhaps it should be Caaaaaaamping. The noise the sheep made as the swaggie stuffed it in his tucker bag.

I've seen the sign post on the side of the road and it looked like a good dirt road to the west.
I do not know about camping..
Could pick the turnoff with GPS???????

As you said the National Park info says definitely no camping at
Combo Waterhole so perhaps this
camp is outside the np area. We went there a few years ago and I can't recall there being a
campsite. I'll put in a plug for the Blue Heeler Hotel at
Kynuna though. The
campground was clean as were the amenities block. We had an enjoyable meal at the hotel and the meal and the camping fee were reasonably priced.

Hi Norm,
We were there in 2005 and, as above, saw no signs of any
camping area. The turnoff is
well signposted. From NATMAP Raster topographic, its position is 21-32-08 S 142-01-28 E (DMS) GDA 94. Normal caution with blacksoil is necessary though if it is wet.
Hope this helps.

Just checked the Camps Australia Wide web site for updates. Site 360
Combo Waterhole is now listed as 'day use only, no camping'.
Should have checked there first I know. But we get a bit lazy wiith all the knowledge available on tap on this
forum.
Looks like it will have to be the Blue Heeler if we stay in the area. Will only be second night of our trip (
Gold Coast to NT for barra fishing), so a pub meal might be a bit over ther top, but I'll let Kathryn twist my arm if she likes.
Thanks guys.

We were there about 5 years ago. As others have said, the two access roads are quite
well signposted and the track in (at least when dry) is good, going across black soil plains. Would probably be no go if wet though. From memory there is a
parking area with a picnic table. From there is a one or two km walk to the actual
waterhole - easy walk, but no swagmen in sight. Of particular interest is
the rock paving on the track, put in by Chinese laboureres over a century ago (no mortar) and still in excellent condition.
Another campiong option is behind the
McKinlay Pub (used in Crocodile Dundee) - fair sized
camping area with the use of the pub's facilities. Its about 70km further on from
Kynuna.
Cheers,
Val

Val, we stayed in the 'Walkabout Creek' Hotel
camp ground at McKinley in 2006. A pleasant spot, but between the compressor on their cold room that rattled like an earth quake when it started and the road trains from the
mine nearby, we got bugger all sleep.
