I'm just looking at some pictures I took in 2003 and I'm trying to work out exactly where they are. It is a series of about 7 or 8 concrete tanks on the left as one drives along Eyre Highway somewhere between
Port Augusta and
Ceduna. I think they are probably between
Port Augusta and
Iron Knob actually - but I'm not sure exactly where. The tanks are probably about 50000 gallons and heavily done over with art work. Can anyone please tell me where they are exactly - how far are they roughly from the nearest town?
Thanks
Jeff

Jeff, strangely enough these structures are often referred to by the locals as "the tanks."
They are between
Port Augusta and
Whyalla, at the main turn off onto the road to
Perth.

yep not far out of
port Augusta. Much of that graffiti looks the same as it was 15 years ago

They may be storage tanks for the
Morgan -
Whyalla Pipeline from the Murray, to store the backlog of
water heading for
Whyalla. Just a guess. From memory they are near the turn off to Baxter Detention Facility (El Alamain area?), just out of Pt Agutta (mate!). Haven't been that way since about 03 myself. I could be a bit out.

The tanks are at the turnoff to
Iron Knob and
Kimba ( The No 1 Hwy) between Pt
Augusta and
Whyalla. Normally are painted each year by the local winners of the footy finals
(was there last week visiting the rellys)

The location is called Lincoln Gap and at
the junction of Lincoln and Eyre Highways.

Next to this
junction is a road side stop named in honor of Mrs Birdseye who was an icon on the "west coast" of SA. A Google search came up with the following links that make interesting reading.

This is the highest point between
port Augusta and
Whyalla so the
water gravitates down to
Whyalla.
There is also a storage dam halfway up the
hill on the to the south of the tanks.
