Hi,

Just wondering what the road from Buchan to Suggan Buggan to Jindabyne is like at the moment. Am planning on towing a 5 metre boat along it. Is it suitable??

Cheers,
Paul.

Drove that road at Easter last year. There are some pretty tight sections and some reasonable gradients from memory. I've never towed a 5m boat, so not sure what conditions are reasonable for that. The road itself is a well made gravel road.

I've driven it but not towed a 5m boat along it however... my advice would be not to.

Hi Paul,
I have towed my 14' 6"" Windsor Rapid van in both directions a number of times along the full length of that road (The Barry Way). The last time was in March, but taken carefully wet weather would not pose any great problem. The road in a number of places is extremely narrow with very steep drop offs so great care is to be taken. If you meet oncoming traffic in some of the narrow sections it will be dificult to pass one another. On some of the bends it is only one car wide and you have to travel very warily as to be alert for that possible head on. Met a guy once towing a horse float and i had to back up about 300mts to a spot we could pass.
With the warnings out of the way, this road would have to be one of the most spectacular drives in Aus, the vast views over magnificent ranges and gorges is a must see and with the road skirting the Snowy River, just brilliant. Imagining the road now i can't wait to do it again. Not particular rough, just travel carefully and enoy.
Regards from Col.

Don't agree. In wet weather, with a caravan I think that road would be very dangerous.

>i had to back up about 300mts

And you consider backing up 300m on a mountain road with a 15' trailer on the back is OK!!?? Don't agree.

>this road would have to be one of the most spectacular drives in Aus

Agreed. No argument there :)

Gday
Darling and I went down this road a couple of years ago with a CT on the back of a Hi Lux 4x4 .The weather was real bad overnight and the road was very slipery. I had the Lux in 4wd just to be safe. We followed a Mazda van for quite some time , and he almost went off and over the side," almost" meaning that both front wheels were over the" wind row" on one corner.be careful

Thanks for the info guys. I'm only dropping off the boat in Canberra so I might do the trip from Jindabyne to Buchan in the Patrol without the boat. Sounds like a better option.

How long will it take from Jindbyne to Buchan? Roughly??

Paul,
we usually do lakes to CBR in around 4.5 to 5 hours. I would allow an extra few hours for the barry way. I have been in convoys with trailers on the barry way _ no probs when the lead car has no trailer and all are on radio comms.
There are quite a number of camps along the snowy if you need to stay over on the way home.
good plan not to take the boat this way, I think it would put unnecessary stress on the transom and motor mounts through bouncing the motor.

I recall leaving Buchan in the morning, and arriving Jindabyne for a late lunch (I highly recommend the Thai Chicken pies), and we took our time. Sorry, cant be more specific than that.

Did this many many years ago in my first 4WD and had a ball.

I actually did a couple of side tracks and tried to get down to the Snowy at one point but Missus and kid were a bit shakey. So was I really but I wasn't going to admit that to them.

We also went down to McKillops Bridge where we had lunch and a swim.

We were in Jindabyne late afternoon. It was spectacular and I would love to get back to that part of the world some time.
