Hay gang have just bought a 2003 3l turbo diesel and was wondering if anybody can tell me what sort of fuel range i should expect from both tanks. At the moment seems to be getting about 7 to750 which is not real flash to me almost as bad as my old 3.5 pajero any info would be great

Hi, You should get that just out of your main tank, depends on tyre sizes, I went from 265/75's to 285/75's and lost about 3
miles /gallon, but still get around 700 on the main tank, just depends on how I drive it.

Mick,
We had a 2003 3.0l td manual and on a long trip (800km+) with a moderate load we used to plan on 8 km/L and achieve that consistently. Around town, it would drop to no better than 7 km/L.
To provide a margin, I assumed only 120 L of fuel (as opposed to 95 + 32).
Your figure does seem a bit on the low side.

My parents 03 3lt gets better than that, can't quote exact figures sorry. But I do recall around 10-11lts per hundred on long trips.
To put it in perspective my 2.8 GU on a trip to brissy from
sydney got 900km on 105lt of diesel. Thats with family on board plus luggage. BUT I must add I was in no hurry so I NEVER went over 105 KM/H tried to stay around 95-100 km/h. I was very impressed. I also took my roof basket off for the trip so that might have helped as
well. With bush driving and low range work I still achive around 800-850 kms from both tanks.
So yes I belive you should be achiving better figures than what you are

Mick
I do a mainly open road driving with only a few k's each day in town, with out my roofrack the low fuel light on the main tank comes on at about 700km's. I have pushed at leats another 60k's out of it and it is still going. I did ask a few years ago on the
forum how long after the fuel light comes on will i get and the general consensus then was about 100k's.
So thats 800k's on the main 95lt = 8.42 Km's per litre
The Sub TAnk is supposed to hold 35 lt but i find i can only really get 32 in so that is all that is useable. 32 lt * 8.42 = 269Km
Total Dist should be about 1069 Km.

G'day Mick,
My 3ltr easily does better than that and I am running 35" tyres, Is yours an automatic?, has it had a new air filter put in it recently? what is your cruising highway speed?

Hi Mick,
I typically get 700 kms to the low fuel light on and then >300 kms before I finally fill up with my 2003 manual 3.0TD GU.
This is around 11.5 L/100kms around town and as good as 10.5 l/100km in the country @ 100km/hr (GPS corrected distance for 285/75R16 tyres). When towing my camper I can get 14.2 l/100kms while sitting on 100 km/hr.
You consumption is around 16 l/100kms (assuming 120L fillup) and this is woeful.
Do you blow any smoke when normally driving/accelerating etc? Have you checked the aircleaner or cleaned the air flow sensor? Do you seem to have decent power (assuming you have driven other 3.0TD's to feel the difference)
Cheers
Captain

Thanks for the replys the car is auto with 265 /75s and has a rhino roof rack. It doesnt blow any smoke and seems to run fine. I have only driven a couple of others when buying so did not realy notice a diff in the short
test drive. Changed the fuel filter to genuine but did not make any diff. I have worked out to be about 16.5 ls per 100 ks. you mentioned something about cleaning the airflow meter how is this done i will give it a try.
many thanks

HI Mickpaj - or should you be Mickpatrol?
Ours is a 2002 auto, and we get around 7-8 kms / litre not towing. We have after long range tank plus standard sub tank. Towing a heavy caravan we average 5 kms / litre.

Mickpaj,
I own a 2004 3.0lt GU manual. I have recently changed the OEM tyres to 265/75/R16 and get no correction error on my speedo (according to my GPS). I have kept a log book since new and since my tyre change my figures have gone from 11.4km/lt (1000km from 120 lt) to 13.2k/lt (900km from 120 lt) This is around town driving and is probably what I was always getting prior to the tyre change. My touring ecconomy is around 14.5km/lt (820km) but that is towing a kimberly kamperwith associated goodies. Highway coasting at 110km/hr without load usually returns around 12.5km/lt (950's from 120lt).
Do you have a
Snorkel???? What type of air filter???? I would get it checked out by your trusty local mechanic.
Good luck
Dave

We have managed the magic 10L/100 a few times on the highway with our auto 3 litre. Usually it's close to 11 or so. 15L/100 with the van in tow, We travel about 90 to 100Kph with the van and this varies with road conditions. We always run with the A/C on. we have a
snorkel and no roof rack. We run standard tyres at the Nissen pressures.
Round town figures 12 to 13 L/100
Truck has about 55,000 ks on the clock, no mods except for cruise control.
I would also like to know how to clean the MAF thingo.

"I would also like to know how to clean the MAF thingo."
Very a hell of a lot of care I am told......I believe you VERY gently wipe the sensor wires with a cotton tip soaked in a mild cleaner of some sorts......DON'T quote me on this!!

I would use the spray on CO cleaner as its easy to use and you can avoid touching the sensitive sensor. I would avoid using carby cleaner - its too agressive and can leave a residue.
Cheers
