When it was time to upgrade to a newer vehicle I came upon this '94 GQ sitting in a car yard and bought it for a reasonable price. It had 265,000km on the clock. Being a standard 4.2 diesel I knew it would be sluggish but by reputation quite reliable.
I flushed the engine out with
CEM product and she ran a bit better. Then one day I nearly seized the engine when I 'lost' the radiator cap. Still, the day was saved and the old donk kept on running.
Since that time I have clocked up nearly 70,000km, some of them through very harsh terrain and with a trailer in tow. Two years ago I started using Flash Lube fuel additive for diesels tipping in 50ml approx with every tankful of diesel. I also drop the oil and filters every 5000km.
I have noticed lately that the engine has a lot more Get Up And Go and on occasions find myself in a moment of inattention, waaaay over the speed limit. Yesterday on Highway 1 I looked on the GPS and was quietly cruising at 120kmh without effort and with extra speed in hand to overtake B Doubles and other slower vehicles.
So, maybe my Nissan is just run in at 334,000km!!!!!!

As with my Post a week or so ago. re: the 3ltr with the stu**ed pump. I would stick with a GOOD DIESEL, one of the real ones, built to last and can be repaired by washing machine mechanic LOL I reckon you will still be able to climb all over the bush for quite a few more K's yet Willem.

If you need a replacement Willem, mate has a good one for sale sitting on the floor with 56,000k on it, he has swapped it for a holden club sport v8 petrol, solved his diesel woooos ! 84 kw to 185 kw

Keep the 4.2.
I will have to keep
mine for a few years yet. There is nothing on the market new which is better.
I have driven 100 series and Prado's at work and I wouldn't consider purchasing either of those vehicles. They don't compare to my GU.
The only hope is that Nissan will eventually produce a decent motor to put in the Patrol rather than the 3.0 ltr.

Oh I will have to keep the 4.2, Tjilpi. No choice really. Anyway changing vehicles every few years used to be the norm with me. Now I keep them for years and years...lol

i havent had it happen to one of
mine but you see in any motorsport,someone gets a realy quick lap time and then its all over.the cause ? im yet to find any specific proof or cause. maybe someone else can shed light on the subject.

The tolerances are very loose, reducing friction. Because of the loose tolerances, the engine is not getting lubricated properly, more oil flow is needed to maintain the oil supply to the top of the motor (rockers, cam etc)
Reduced oil supply= increased/accelerated wear.
I think that is how it works.
The
Bathurst guys have one engine for qualifying (top 10 shootout) and another engine for the race. Both built to different specifications/ tolerances.

Axle, I will hedge my bets on the Nissan. Never buy them lotto tickets. At 10,000,000 to 1 the chances aren't good...lol
