I previously had Coopers AT . When I needed new tyres the salesman told me that Coopers had overcome the lug problem with the new ATR .
THEY HAVEN'T - I did a 10,000 klm up to and around Alice and back , and some of the lugs are completely missing , whilst others have great chunks out of them .
I got a 3 inch rip in a sidewall on Friday on that notorious 4WD drive track called the Great Western Highway - at
Leura ! Expensive trip to
Oberon .

"the salesman told me that Coopers had overcome the lug problem" I suppose that was just moments before you handed the same fella $1250+ :-))
1.People buy Coopers because high profile tour opperators recomend them. They undoubtably do this because they get sets given to them & as they chip & wear just hand them back for a replacement.
2.The patterns on the Coopers are excellent giving great traction & road holding.
3.They look great.
4.They are the most highly advertised 4x4 tyre on the market.
5.They have greater tread depth so buyers automatically assume this translates in to more KM's. This together with what appears on the surface to be a great warrenty & people can be foregiven for paying the extra to buy a tyre that is in reality nothing special.
I'm not saying they are a bad tyre, just from what I've seen they rarely live up to the excessive claims in their advertising.
On every central Australian trip I've been on where a set of Coopers was fitted, they were the worst performing tyre for wear & punctures in our group.
Cheers Craig...........

Agreed Craig.
I still run my BFG Muddies and they have impressed me no end.
Last year I was on a 5 week outback trip with two other vehicles.
One vehicle had Coopers and had multiple side wall punctures which would require multiple plugs to seal and then the side wall continued to split requiring more plugs.
The other vehicle had Good Year MTR's on splits and he destroyed one tyre on the Anne Beadell and suffered further flats for no apparent reason, cause put down to tube issues.
Me I had no flats the whole 14,000 km's including cross country between Warri and the Calvert Ranges.
No Coopers for this fella, as you say their implied warranty is nothing but rubbish same as the tyre.

Hey Crackles
I'm a high profile tour operator, I wouldn't put cooper on my cars if you paid me.
I'll keep to my Oz made Bridgestones, 11 sets so far, that mean 11 set of no trouble, 11 sets at $ 100 per tyre cheaper, 11 sets at 60000 km + and 11 times the profits stayed in Australia.
Cheers Steve.

To be honest Steve I don't know how they can put their name beside Cooper tyres any more as recomending a 2nd or 3rd rate product that doesn't live up to it's advertising only drags their reputation down in my eyes. Initially I thought some of the failures could be put down to bad batches, wrong tyre pressure or poor driving but very few people in my circles have ever had a good run out of them.
What pattern & ply rating do you use on your tours out of interest Steve?
Cheers Craig.............

Hi Crackles.
I use Oz made D693 265/75R/16 Bridgestone and run 40psi front and 42psi rear.
These tyres do 30000 km on corrugated dirt roads a year.

I was looking at a set of tyres on Friday. The ARB
shop down here deal in Coopers and MT's. The guy told me right up front that the Coopers rip lugs off no question about it.
I'm buying the MT's.

Here is my last set of Cooper ST/Cs
These were replaced under warrenty, with STTs, they are gone now as they started falling apart too, we decided NOT to go with Coopers again under their warrenty plan and went with Nankang Muds instead.
My opinion on Coopers is THEY ARE CRAP.
Tread block completely gone
Coming off
All 4 were like this
Have i mentioned COOPERS ARE CRAP

When I was recently looking for tyres, I was put off by the fact the coopers only had an 'N' speed rating which is 140km/h. It's not too hard to get close to that speed when overtaking etc. Most of the other tyres I checked had an 'S' rating of 180 km/h. A much bigger margin of error in my mind, even if travelling no where near those speeds.

Well I run Cooper ATR's and have found them no problems so far in 50.000 klms mind you i'm not doing the real outback stuff many of you are. I am about to purchase some new tyres 2 in fact before I head to the Flinders in a few weeks just so I have depth in the tread and use the Coopers as spares.
I am looking at trying MT and put them on the front they have the same rolling diamiter as the Coopers (so i'm told). Why MT simple to try a different brand, I may even look at the bridgestones.
I just gotta work out if its worth mixing tyres.

If you have any doubts about Cooper tyres then look at the tyre dumps in a place like
Alice Springs. I am sure there is not the same percentage on 4WDs as in the dumps.
From experiece there are tyres suitable for towing and others not. Most tyres are good for something even if it is holding down the tarp.

I agree. Toyo Open Country are better than Coopers ATR. I could't believe how much the Coopers cut up on the
Oodnadatta Track. Large chunks about inch square out of the tread on all tyres. In fact we lost a new one (Spare) A complete ripout of the tread, after a
puncture. I had them rotated as per the warranty etc .
I since changed them at 30000ks In
Alice Springs to the Toyo Open Country ATR and are extremely happy.
Incidently I am towing a Australian Offroad Camper Cross Terrain which has Sumitomo ATR and they have no chips out of the treads and look like new.
I paid particular attention to Tyre pressures in accordance with the Manufactures reccommondations.
Coopers are a disappointment and I will not reccommend them to anybody.

lol Open country - now there is a tyre i wouldnt recomend. Only AT tyre i have seen rip tread block off. I bought an 80 with near new open countrys and did not do one trip (less than 5k) without dramas. Tread ripped off, flats torn sidewalls - fair dinkum I wouldnt put them on a whell barrow. I had to remove them for my own saftey i like to go to woolies and make it back!

I am reading this post with interest,
I am about to put new
tyres on my Standard 100 Series (split rims) for a trip into the Kimberly. I was going Cooper ST, but not now.
My second choice is BFG A/T 235/85/16. What are people's thoughts on the good old Bridgestone Desert Dueller 604V pattern. I have had these in the past with no issues and it would be a cheap way out. Although, the BFG A/T is rated to carry more weight.
Can you help me to decide ??
Thanks

Jack ,
I would go for the BFG - I am next time .
Willie .
PS
The sidewall tear in my Cooper was not a fault of the tyre - it would have happened to any tyre of the same cross section . My problem is with the NEW "IMPROVED" AT/R which was meant to have solved the lug problem .

Jack, I ran Cooper ATR's 285/75/R16 on my 100 series. Good tyre for ride and handling, but chipped badly on gravel and I had two cases crack around the bead with cracks also near the shoulder on both. Were off the rear and I do tow heavy trailers.
Tyres were replaced after 65000km with BFG M/t 255/85R16. Much happier. It actually handles better with the muddies on the tar and gravel, although not as stable in the wet on the black stuff ( WE HAD RAIN). Hope i get reasonable wear. So far 10000km and very happy. We also run BFG M/T on Landcruiser RV ute and get about 75000km per set (tar and coarse gravel roads). Brother had Cooper ST/C on Landcruiser ute 45000, just replaced with STT's, interesting to see how they wear and compare to BFG M/T. Both utes run 265/75R16. Sorry for rambling, hope this helps rather than confuses you.
Regards Kirsten (NSW)

Well sounds like my Cooper ATR's will be tested in a few weeks to Flinders might take some photo's before I go when I get there and when home and see what they turn out like. Not that I will be covering a lot of area only about 4000 klms but should give a indication what is happening with them. Time will tell.
I will also have two new
tyres on what these will be I'm not sure as said earlier maybe Micky Thompson will look at some bridgestones and check there prices.
The only issue is I guess is different brand
tyres, which i'm not a great lover of. At least that will give me 2 new on the front and 2 on rear with 70% and two spares with approximately 70% so

I have had Coopers ST-C 265/75/16 for 60000ks. Probably 20000 on various outback roads. Through Simpson,Tanami track (stayed in 2WD)
Kimberley Karajini. Lots of bitumen down WA.
Googs track and Top of Flinders.
I have not had a puncture. Tread down to 9 mm from 14 mm. No damage.
There is so much anecdotal stories, its very hard to get an objective opinion. I need to replace
tyres soon and find teasing the truth from the sales pitches difficult. i'll probably stay wiht the Coopers ST-C as theyve served me well.

I agree with you, Shaker about first hand. Perhaps I should have noted that my wider investigaions with tyre dealers and experienced 4wd people gave difficult to rationalise opinions. Checking other tyre threads show other first hand experience with wide differences of opinion. I supose we just have to live with what best we know when its time to make the tyre choice. Talking of choice has anyone a reference to any Choice Magasine articles on 4WD
tyres?

After reading your opinions of Cooper
tyres thought Id give you our lowdown on them. Put Cooper ST's on our brand new Landcruiser RV ute took off for round
Australia trip, rotated every 10000 ks after 30000 ks huge horizontal cracks and bulges appeared on the sidewalls of two passenger side
tyres....took them off and put on two spares (10000 ks on them after rotation) went back to dealer after much discussion they prorata'd two
tyres when they took them off the rims they discovered that the RV alloys were damaged. So we had to replace the rims as well So four Steel rims were purchased. Then we started investigating just what caused the rims to deteriorate we were duck shoved betweem Toyota and Cooper
tyres for a few months and they eventually rang us to say that a recall on ST's x16 (our size)had been put in place because of bulging sidewalls which they blamed on the rubber compound. 6 new
tyres and no rims off we go again feeling slightly better about Cooper
Tyres 20,000 ks later we are travelling along and I check the
tyres as you do and bugger me a whole lug is gone down to the wire. Now I am a patient man but I am not even contacting Coopers again (a mans had enough of the bull bleep ) And the only use I have for them is to drop fuel drums off the back of the ute onto and even then I still have to check the sidewalls for damage!!!
