Hi all,

SWMBO has laid down the law and said our next holiday (this school hols in a couple of weeks) has to be relaxing with no hectic sightseeing. Also dictating 5 stars not millions (if you know what I mean). We are booked in for 4 nights at Horsham.

Anyway, day trips may be a possibility. Can anyone suggest any tracks within striking distance which I may be able to head to (while she is reading her book)?

Won't have much recovery gear on board so can't be too extreme but any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have heard Mt Cole may be a possibility?

Thanks in advance

Trevor

Hi Doug,

have spent a few days in the western and central sections of the Little Desert NP. Very close and not friendly on the paintwork but I didn't think there was much that was all that challenging. Was worth a visit and is on my list if the "why don't you chill out and read a book" wears a bit thin (not that I have anything against books of course).

Don't exactly know where you were , I just had a look at my Oz maps and where I was was big desert Wilderness Park and the Murray Sunset Park, If you were in there in summer and broke down it could be as bad as any other desert, also if you want a challenge try the border up to the sturt Hwy, I got stopped by a dune in there , it was huge, and my troopy then was not prepared for such terrain so went back , but around Rocket Lake is a good drive.

What about the Grampians ? or have they closed most of that area as well. Had a good look around there a few years ago - quite nice.

Hi Doug,

Murray Sunset and Rocket Lake etc is a fair way North of where I will be. On the wrong highway.

Some nice 4wding in the Pyrenees. Basically either side of the highway between Ararat and Avoca. Plenty of wineries if you get sick of driving.

Hi Phil,

I have heard the Pyrenees is worth a look. Can you recommend any particular tracks? The maps I have aren't very detailed. Are there any web links to tracks etc?

Thanks

If you go to www.dse.vic.gov.au/dse/index.htm then click onto the interactive maps (in the menus on the right side of the screen), then forest explorer, these are good quality maps and you can create pdf files and save them to you computer. There is plenty of good tracks around Avoca (am heading there this weekend) and not too far from a town if anything happens.
These maps will give you a good idea of what tracks are around Horsham as well.
Cheers Andrew

Andrew, that site is great. Thanks for pointing it out.

Trevor,
We did it as a club trip about 5 years ago, so I'm a bit patchy on the names of the tracks we did. But we camped in the Pyrennes State Forest, which is an area circled by Landsborough, Warrenmang, Avoca, Amphitheatre and Elmhurst. There are plenty of tracks in there. We entered via Miles Lane which heads south off the Glenlofty-Warrenmang Rd just to the west of Warrenmang. From there you're onto Miles Track, or Clear Patch Track, or Hardy Track and you can take it from there. We camped off Farnsworth track about a kilometer north of the intersection with Clear patch track.

we also wandered over to the area around Mt Buangor/Mt Cole, but teh tracks we did weren't as adventurous.

The tracks are a bit like the High Country, except the mountains are only half as high and the creeks have no water. But you'll need low range and you'll be scrambling up steep rocky tracks. Wet weather would make things interesting.

Regarding maps, the Auslig 250k don't have the tracks, but will give you a great idea of where you are, and which direction you're heading. The 50k survey maps would be better. I haven't heard of any other good maps of the area.

Cheers
phil

Hi Trev.

Did a club trip to the Pyrenees last Easter, some great tracks but I'd be taking recovery gear and another vehicle on most of them. We had rain on Good friday at lunchtime and spent most of the afternoon winching as the tracks became very difficult.
Ther was some gravel roads/tracks around the Percydale historic area that would be worth a look and the views from Ben Nevis are awesome, easy access for a solo vehicle. I can also highly recommend the lamb shanks at the Elmhurst pub. I can't wait to get back next Easter as it is a great area.

Been up in the Pyrenees with the Riverland Fourwheel Drive Club and also with a group headed by Member Glenn with Mr and Mrs Al, Crazie, nowimnumberone and Willem and Judith. Plenty of really good tracks there that can be difficult with some rain and others downright confronting if you don't build your experience, but watch the weather.

Use lower tyer pressures with the slippery and stony tracks as it will help a lot with the grip and also the cushioning. 20psi front and 25psi rear last time I was there was pretty good allowing minimal slippage, and that was with Moses, a heavier ute....

Hey Bonz, that would be great but not sure exactly when I will be allowed to escape. Booked into a farm stay in Horsham from Sun night to Thurs morning.

Thanks to all for the responses. Looks like enough around to keep me amused.

Keep an eye out for a red GU if you are in the area. EO sticker on the back window.

Cheers

Hi Trev, pack a picnic lunch and head up across to Rainbow, go north of the town and you can spend a good few hours or more doing the tracks around Lake Albucutcha, open sand tracks which aren't too hard, bit soft in spots so drop the pressures. There are nice little dunes which constantly change sand types and colours, just dont be surprised that the lake is dry, but you can drive right across the middle.

If you want to give it a go, drop me a member message and i'll put you on to a truly unique sight which the kids will probably never see anywhere else ( or yourself for that matter).

cheers Brad.

Ps yeah easy day tripping through the middle of the gramps as well.

The Grampians have some nice easy 4WD ing as well as great walks. For Little Desert and Wyperfield etc, have a look at Westprint's Web site www.westprint.com.au/ or call in to their place a Nhill on your way through. They have maps and lots of trek notes on the back, and a chat in the shop with them will get you advice on which ones meet your distance and gear requirements.

Don't forget Victoria is a little state - you can cross a lot of its map in a short time.

Cheers and enjoy the accommodation - don't pine for the camping!
