Will be towing a camper, we are hiring one to try before we buy, a Trackabout Safari.
I am thinking of heading up to
Hughenden to show the
young bloke the dinosaur stuff and also the
Lark quarry out of
Winton, hence the spare days ATM will prob reshuffle arriving in the Isa a day or so.
Do you think it's too much for 14-16 days would like to spend a day in Diamantina NP and on the Cooper just to remind me of what I'm missing when back at work
Any suggestions on
camp spots would be much appreciated.
Regards Glen.

Everybody varies in this respect but I think you (and especially your son - how old?) will be sick of the sight of the car by the time you get
home.
Nine of your days are longish drives and I suspect you'll spend time driving around doing the tourist thing on your "off" days.

We are plenty used to long days in the car and the
young bloke (7) has been travelling offroad since he was 6 weeks. He is still more than happy to spend 4-5 hours in the car between leg stretches, he's a good traveller.
Just hope I'm not trying to see too much in the time frame, but can only get these 2 weeks now and then 3 weeks at Xmas and I hate going anywhere at Xmas time due to crowds and its too hot to be comfortable out that way in summer.

Thats the type of trip we used to do with our boys, since they were 2 and 6.
500k was reasonably easy with seeing things as we go.
Could do 700k or more for a one day push.
We had a pouchs of stuff on the back of the front
seat for them to do.
Roma to
Longreach counting dead roos is a favourite past time.
Record so far is about 250.
We find that once we get to Charleville/
Morven, the scent of
home gets strong and we ued to do it in one day, so that might give you an extra day.
Yes, go to
Muttaburra and see the dinosaurs, and the old hospital.
Lark quarry good too.

seqfisho,
Suggest that after you visit
Lark Quarry, backtrack a little bit and stay at Old Cork on the Diamantina (Sat 19/08). Was there last year in May and caught yellowbelly. No facilities though. Then continue on down through
Diamantina National Park.
Cheers,
Bros.

Hello Glen,
Kronosaurus Korner at
Richmond is really worthwhile visiting. It's really good. The road up through
Muttaburra is ok too. I also reckon you could get
home from
Morven with only about 800kms to travel...and
home is waiting without having to set up
camp!!
We used to do this kind of trip with our kids when they were
young. They loved it. We would do one big day to begin with...about 1000kms..leaving early in the morning, then after that have a mixture of distances depending on what we were wanting to see and do in each area.
As far as
camp spots...
Mitchell has a nice
camp spot at the Weir on the west side of town. You can
camp for free at
Muttaburra.
Richmond's cp is very good, clean etc. If you head west from
Blackall to
Isisford (instead of going up to
Barcaldine) you can
camp on the Barcoo River.
Ilfracombe has a nice little museum to the Australian Light Horse.
You'll have a great time. Best wishes.
Viv
