Ga'day all . Havent been on for some time so i through i'd drop a line and maybe get some info . The cook and i are off on a desart run in about 4 weeks . Anne Beadell is up first , then up to Dahhousie . Then it's across the Simpson , and this where i need some advice . There was to be 2 to 3 vehicles , butnow we are 1 . My question is , witch is the best and safest way to go west to east for one vehicle ? We may be able to hook up with others , but that's not always posable , so we must plan the trip and expect to be on our own . I will say that we are not new to 4x4ing, but when going somwhere new its good to get advice from people who have been , dun that . Thanks in advance . Errol & Jan

Read willem's recent posts about simpson conditions, very dry and extremely soft.
Unless it rains soon this years travellers will be doing it pretty hard due to soft conditions.
A lone vehicle would be well advised to stick to the more frequently travelled routes in case of problems.

Good points Peter. Any previous experience in recently wet sand is totally different to the very soft sand Willie spoke of.

We did the same trip 2 years ago (2 vehicles) I dont think you will have any problems if you take it easy, but you know that. We were towing trailers, so decided not to do the French line. We did half of the WAA line and that was testing on the vehicles and trailers, so decided to finish on the Rig Road. Probably will take longer, but just as enjoyable. PS there have been a lot of posts in the past month about the Simpson (Ruth @ Birdsville and others) if you do a search you can see them. Wish I could take some time off - I would go with you

Hi Errol

A single vehicle crossing should be OK but make sure you have a good shovel!!!! and good comms

Read my post 33778 for updated info.

BTW Even the Rig Road has some tricky dunes this year.

Cheers

G'Day mate,,

West to East is the easier direction...
If you stay on the French Line,, it is like the main road from Dalhousie to Birdsville...Up and down... Up and down.... Up and down...
We slipped down to the Rig Road and drove the main leg of that but there are quite a few steep dunes,,,, not so much high,, but some are like walls...
Takes a well thought out crack at it to crest on the first go,,,,, not so much dangerous but more like fun...
We went through there in June peak season and didnt pass a sole until we got back to the K1 - QAA Line...4 days from memory...
So comms is important down there...More fun than sticking to the French Line....
I would go Rig Road.....

In my car Jason and myself,,,both 40ish,,, In Navara couple of 55yr old blokes,,,, In triton we are picking up near Cairns,,, Bloke and his wife 35ish....
We are not loud music all night people,,, prob have some quiet drinks around campfire and in bed by 10ish or so most nights...

Hi Errol,
We just completed a trip from Birdsville to Dalhousie. Left Birdsville 3/5/06 and camped at Dalhousie 6/5/06. We had three vehicles, so we travelled via French, The Knolls Track and then the WAA line. Although East to West is said to be harder, we didn't think so. The French line is hard work and not very pleasant. The WAA line is a little easier and more interesting however I wouldn't travel it alone, although we saw one vehicle that was travelling alone (we had to pull them off a dune top).
The safest would be the Rig Road then you could travel up the Knolls Track to the French Line for the relatively short distance to Poepels Corner.
We had a Prado 4.5l petrol and used 127 litres between Birdsville and Oodnadatta.
The desert had had a little rain and was quite green. The sand on the French line was soft and badly rutted, the WAA line sand was a lot firmer.
Regards
Lee

Ga'day Tuf 80 , Interested , sure . We will be leaving home on the 10th ,June . It will take about 5 or 6 days to cover the Anne Beadell to Coober Pedy , with a rest day there , then drive up to Dalhousie . We planed to have a couple of days there as the cook liks the hot springs , so i through i'd better give her a chance to enjoy them . So , i'd say we won't be leaving Dalhousie untill the 20th to 22nd . Don't know if this sutes you , but that's rough'y our plan's . If these date's are ok with you , let me know and we mite make direct contact . Everything i'm reading and hearing is telling me to go the Rig Rd , witch way were you thinking of going ? Cheers . Ga'day Glenn, Mel & Caleb . We are meeting up with Voxen at Cobby Pedy on the 20th then coming up to Dalhousie. From what i have been told , you mite not like to swim at Dal as there are surposed to be mites in the water , so i would check befor you swim . I would say we will be there on the 21st , and if its true about the mites , then we will have a look around , stay overnight , then move on I think . If you have VKS you may be able to track our progress across the anne beadell . Cheers Errol

That gives us 7 days to get there , should be ok . Take a look at TUF80 's post , the one above , thay will be there at the same time . Don't know why i said the 20th , it should only take us about 5 days to cross the Anne Beadell , then a day in Cobber to do washing ectra , then up to Dal and meet you all there . Cheers Errol
