Hi all

am planning to go to the Wonangatta sometime over Christmas / New Year. A friend from interstate wants to come up for a day or two but will only have 2wd. He is staying at Traralgon.

Cany anyone recommend or advise a 2wd route from there?

Gazza , you must be joking ! Forget it in a 2WD There are stories of 2WD access from the Abeyard end years ago and I have seen a 2WD F100 in there in the past but from the south is a very different proposition !

2 wheel drive route to Wonnangatta Station.
Bairnsdale, Omeo, Hotham to Myrtleford.
Buffalo river rd, Abbeyard trk, East Buffalo rd, East Riley rd.
Park car & walk 10 kilometres along Wonangatta track ;-)

The trip would take 8 hours drive + the walk each way so I doubt your friends day or two will be enough.

The Wonnangatta track is just possible in a high clearance 2 wheel drive (if it's not raining) although the river has been running pretty high so could be 1/2 a metre + deep.
Not normally a 2wd destination.....
Cheers Craig........

From the south he could drive up to the top of Zeka Spur, then he would need a lift in from there. Or take the walking track down Zeka Creek.

Gazzas
I took a Triumph Herald in there from myrtleford about 30 years ago.
On my recent visit the tracks were different and you wouldn't do it now in 2WD without a locked/ limited slip diff and a fair bit of grunt, and maybe not even then.

If they drive to Talbotville, Eaglevale or the top of Zeka spur (on the Howitt Rd) you could go and pick them up in the Prado. Seems the safest way.

You could drive up towards Mt Howitt from Licola, then stop at Bryces Gorge Car Park. There is a walking track from their into Wonnangatta.

If it was a ute or a 2wd vehicle with reasonably high clearance you might be able to get in their on Zeka Spur, but you would be stuffed if it rained, and it would be very interesting on the brakes coming down the hills in a 1st gear. I would not attempt it and DO NOT advise that you attempt it. You would need new brakes once you got their, and a new clutch once you got back out....

I have found Zeka Spur an easy but rough track in a 4wd (Hilux). I needed low range a fair bit on the hills cause mine is a petrol.

Wombat Spur from the Dargo end, is probably steeper than Zeka spur, so a definate no-no in a 2wd as you have no low range.

I have never been in from Mrytleford so I can't comment on these tracks.

We went in via Myrtleford a couple of weeks ago and 2 wheel drive would be fine till you start on the Wonangatta track. Good ground clearance then is necessary and crossing the Wonangatta would be problematic - exits both ways far too washed out for a 2 wheel drive. I think that it would just be impossible.
