Good evening folks, A small group of us are doing the
Simpson desert from
Birdsville then up the old Ghan to Chambers,
rainbow then Alice. on the way back down we are wanting to go through Finke
Gorge N/P. Now if there has been rain i've been told by one who got as far as Bogy hole some years ago and couldn't see iether the entry in or out that they turned around as the xing was to wide and they decided not to get there feet wet.So other than walking the xing if needed which we will flip a coin to see who gets wet, is there any particular markings, trees post etc etc to line up from one side to the other. And dose anyone know how deep the xing can actually get when flooded? I've only seen two
pic's of
boggy hole one empty and one damed wide. Any info on this xing and the Finke
Gorge in general that will make the trip a better trip would be greatefully appreciated.
Thanks in advance Steve West.

I drove through
Boggy Hole a couple of weeks ago. Lots of soft sand, but no real problems (with the usual equipment, low tyre pressures etc) Taking trailers in is banned. Anyone doing this route is asked to notify the
ranger station first. They also have up to the minute info on the state of the road and will close it there is likely to be a problem. There is water in
Boggy hole at the moment, but you don't go through it. Rain is forecast as a possibility later this week. I'd be guided by up to the minute advice from the rangers. Don't have the phone number at the moment, will get it and post it here.
I hope you get to do it. One of our best local drives.

Hi
Finke
Gorge number is (08) 89567401.
Have been through there a few times and last time the water level was so low that there is no water to cross, only water to
camp by. The track is pretty
well marked, just let your tyre pressure down a tad for the soft sand, but after the Simpson that shouldn't be an issue for you.
have fun, I'm jealous.

I wouldnt be too concerned about have any trouble with water crossings up here, it hasent rained properly for years. If by some miricle it does usually a couple of days after you should get through if your keen and carefull. Tracks and depths change after a big rain so trust anyones advice or markers, walk through first!
The rangers have recently graded a track along the side of the range so you really dont have to cross
Boggy Hole any more, unless of course you want to have a bit of fun.
Hope this helps and have fun. Dont forget the Finke Desert Race is on this weekend 12th and 13th of June.
Cheers
