Hi All
Im planning a trip up to Coongie Lakes in late August this year.
Just wondering whether the main tracks are suitable for a 6m tandem fully off road caravan being towed by Landcruiser 200series.
I’ll do the usual road condition checks nearer the date.
Thanks Craig

The main road to Coongie can be pretty corrugated (they don't grade it often, but you might be lucky), but otherwise I would not expect you to have too many dramas.

There are some nice camp sites to the east along the spit, but you might struggle to get over the dune?

Thanks Peter.
Love corrugations but not getting bogged on sand dunes with a van in tow. So maybe I’ll just stick to the main track.
Cheers.

It is a short walk from the main track, so go and have a look. Don't take my word for it :)

Hi Craig

Have taken our camper trailer in , but wouldn't like to try getting back out with a caravan. It's a decent sized dune and not just straight up and down.

Camping is fine without going over the dunes.

Cheers

It’s not just the dune to get over to the spit. You have to go down a dune to get to the water & consequently you have to come back up it too when you leave. Not saying it couldn’t be done with the 6m tandem but I suspect it may be a challenge. This from someone who has never towed anything like that. We went there towing a Tvan - 5 tonne all up between Tvan & tow vehicle - was ok and sand was fairly soft coming out following a full on sand storm.

It’s a great place & worth a visit, but park up at the turning circle at the end of the track & go for a walk down the dune to see how you feel about it. We found the dune to get across to the spit easier(not as tall) than the one back to the main track. 16 psi all round & just crawled up with ease.

Hi Craig,

Given recent rains and future forecast rain events in that area, the road out is likely to be a challenge. I have only been out there once, about 8 or 9 years ago, not towing a van, and the road whilst corrugated was not too bad. As others have said, it does not get graded very often. Checking the road conditions closer to your planned travel date would be a wise move.

If you have the ability to leave your van in Innaminka and drive out and camp with a tent, that may also be an option worth considering. It is well worth the effort to get out there if you can. Bird life is amazing, there are also a few dingos to keep an eye out for.

I've made about half a dozen attempts over the years to get into Coongee (and several to go through Walkers Crossing), and it seems to be always bloody closed !!!

It is a major wet land, so maybe not surprising?
Keep trying. It is worth it.

Birdsville got a big dump today, it’s closed the Birdsville Track and the Birdsville Gymkhana that was going to be held this weekend has now been cancelled and postponed until June.
