Reversing Camera

Had a quick look, at safety Dave’s, but no pricing on the site . I’ve got CWI screens and cameras (wired) in my 4wd and motorhome, pretty happy with them. CWI aim their market at the Ag industry. That’s where I had used them previously. Not cheap but seem good quality,(had a couple of cheapies before and got sick of them) I buy mine from a local machinery dealer they keep a lot of stuff on the shelf.

When we had our caravan built, it came with a SVS 100 series reversing camera and another camera for the vehicle.

The picture is very clear, I am totally satisfied and service has been good.

I worked with some farmers who had camera on all vehicles and machinery and no picture was as clear as the system we had.

Depending on your expertise you can make up a kit yourself. Buy a screen as mentioned above and fit the camera/s to it. I use two cameras on a caravan mostly for reversing use but with one placed to from same plane as the side of the vehicle and the other to track the white line you can position it all quite well. Most cameras are for reversing and provide a wide view but not distance observation. With the rear LHS camera, it actually sees around the corner which mirrors cannot do, so increased safety and surety there. The RHS camera is much the same , but if a constant driving picture is required a better camera which "sees" down the road further may be a better option. A road train nearly up to you looks far away, That is the drawback for constant use.
I use an automated system to select whichever camera I want to view from, But a relatively simple switch can be arranged to run both camera video line to the screen, and power to that camera, one at a time. If a multiple pole switch is used, it can switch the power to and video from whichever camera you require to see. Most systems don't provide a selection of camera inputs. I know some have two cameras and you press a button while reaching up to the screen to change the viewing camera, a pain to me.. A simple switch near controls is far better and if arranged with the toggle to the L or R you always know at a glance what you are seeing or intending to see.

Trevor, most rear view cameras are pretty useless if they have a wide view angle. Following traffic appears miles away and if they are approaching at speed the are on you before you see them, even big semi's and roadtrains. I managed to find one with a view angle of 30 degrees for our van and it gives a good view of what is behind. They are not easy to find and I can't recall where I got mine from but it was a Chinese supplier. Sorry can't help with details. Sixty degree ones are on eBay but in my view it isn't worth using any camera with a view angle more than 60 deg. Sure wider angle cameras give a wider view but that is what mirrors are for.

RMD commented on the field of view, or degree . That’s the hard part, I have a couple of different one’s. 150 degree gives huge field of vision but you can’t see far back up the road, so depends what you need. CWI have 150, 120, 92 and 65 maybe others .

Trevor, I have a reverse camera form Elinz, It is a quite few years old now but has never given any trouble and I see everything I want to. Thepicture is also good quality.

We use Balckeye Systems from AEI - Ionic. Not cheap, but stand up in mining and earth moving applications. Can get various angle cameras.
