We are heading to Lake Eyre next week and would like to get to Level Post Bay. Any advice on whether we can make the trip from Marree to Level Post Bay and return as a day trip. Alternatively we will stay at Muloorina Homestead Camping area for a night.

Hi coutaboat

It would be a long day, but why not stay a couple of night at Muloorina, it is a great secret spot to camp.

If you do stay, please to the right thing and use the honesty box to pay the $10 camping fee, as when we were there, 5 seperate vehicles came in, set up camp, walked past the honesty box, did not put any money in and then drove off next morning.....and we wonder why great places like this get closed down.

The drive out from Muloorina will be slow, so just drive to the conditions.

Cheers

Stephen

Hi coutabout

You will really enjoy your stay ay Muloorina, and it is just a great place to fit back by a campfire, and enjoy the solitude of the area.

Like any drives, lower your tyre pressures and drive to the conditions and you will have no problem at all.

I am not sure if you have been out that way before, but if you have not, head out of Marree on the Oodnadatta Track and the signposted turnoff to Muloorina is only a couple of kilometres out of Marree.

We collected our firewood a few kilometres from the campgrounds turn off, where there was lots of dead timber.

If I was in your shoes, my 2 nights at Muloorina would be the first night out from Marree, leaving your camp setup and then doing a days drive out to Level Post Bay, then coming back, get the campfire going again and then just sit back and watch the cattle come in for their evening drink.

Enjoy your trip.

Cheers

Stephen

Well Stephen we took your advice and stayed at Muloorina. Didn't find any water when we got to Level Post Bay but the drive out there was awesome. Undoubtedly though the highlight of the entire trip was the photos of the sunrise at Muloorina Camp. The reflections on the water and the vibrant colours were something else.

Thanks for your great advice on this remarkable location.

Hi coutaboat,

It was a pleasure to share Muloorina as a special stay, and glad you enjoyed your visor there.

You can also see what I mean about all the hype about Lake Eyre being full of water from people that really have no idea.

All the best and enjoy our very special Outback regions.

Cheers

It was very corrugated from Muloorina to the lake when I did it a few years ago, so pretty slow going. Marree to Level Post Bay and back is almost 200kms with around a third of that on those corrugations, so it would be a big day.

Thanks Michael I don't need any big days. Muloorina has it.

The places algorithim often misses Muloorina to Level Post Bay Track-SA. This will give a better idea of track conditions. The Magna did not get bogged once and we did the 200 km return in a day. You need a sunny day with a deep blue sky...... W
