Hi there. Just wondering if there are any restrictions to walk freely the "Walls of China" at Lake Mungo. Previously we have been able to walk and explore but I have a feeling there may be restrictions now in place. Wondered if anyone can shed some light of their experiences?

Hi imjames

You are correct, you can no longer walk freely around the Walls of China.

To do that now and restricted where you walk, it will cost you $50 per adult on a guided walk with the Ranger.

They only happen at a few times per day, so if you miss that time, bad luck.

Cheers

Went yesterday on a tour out of Mildura ,picked up and dropped off at our C/P , morning tea on arrival, an hour to have a look at the old shearing shed and surrounds, then over to the Walls of China and our a very informative guide was able to take us (10) on to the dunes to have a close up look at what was there..then came back to a lookout over the lake and had lunch (a very nice lunch). On the way back he took us to have look at a very big eagles nest that he had spotted a few weeks earlier. Great trip..$145.00 per person

I'd recommend the trip also, we did it in October a sunset tour and it was worth the money. The tour guide was very informative.

We did a very informative tour at Easter with a ranger out of Balranald for $30 per head. Our 15 YO was free.
We booked through the visitors centre.

That sounds more reasonable, people aren't made of money. Fair is fair.

Hi Phanton

That is very interesting, as we were there the week before Easter and I was given the price of $50 pp, and then cheaper if you had a seniors or concession card by an Aboriginal Ranger that does the tours.

The down side was they only were doing tours at 9am, 12 noon and 3pm. We arrived just after 9 am , so missed out on the 9am tour and got back after 3 to do the other times, and then spent the rest of the day doing the self guided drive.

Cheers

Hi Stephen,
Looks like we just missed you.
We were there with our Ultimate. There was another Ultimate that left on the Thursday (camping with an A-van) and then another that arrived later on Thursday.

We were there on the Wednesday and Thursday before Easter and did the tour on the Thursday, meeting the Ranger from Balranald at the Info Centre at Mungo. His name was Herman.

In 2009 we were astonished that we could walk freely on the lunette, and knew that this would not be allowed for much longer.

Do take a tour if you can get your timing right. You will see shown places and things you never otherwise know about just wondering around.

Mungo tour times and prices

There is also a new visitor centre since our visit, with a whole lot more to see there.
