We are planning to travel from the south to the Big Red Music bash in first week of July. We would then like to drive east to
Sydney starting off on the Development Road to
Windorah, then onto
Quilpie.
Just want to know if any one has traveled that road lately and what it is like please?

That road from
birdsville to the Diamantina dev road will be like a 4 lane highway before and after the bash. Rain permitting that is, Big festivals bring people, people bring money, money brings graders, so the road will be A1 except for the speed clowns.

That's a great drive, did it a couple of years ago the other way (from Brissy) to the Simpson, with little detour down to see
Haddon Corner and camped there overnight.
Old
Betoota is a gem to explore,
Deons Lookout for a great view and humble reflection on a lost son there.
Leaving
Birdsville, oOnce you get to Diamantina Dev Rd you are set . . . blacktop and a bit narrow in
places, but fine with care.
Birdsville Dev Rd is a really
well maintained dirt road, only a problem in / after rain, possible closure etc if really bad.
There have been a couple of same threads re travel to the BRB or the races . . .

Yep.
For any outback road just a bit of rain can see it closed by the authorities* so it pays to
check road conditions reports before you commit.
* The rule of thumb for
Birdsville is 17mm according to a former copper there. That's quite a lot and is a measure of the quality of the main access roads (gravel surface, drainage etc). Others need much less.

Thanks for the information fellow bush travelers. So if it doesn't rain the
Birdsville development rd will be a goods drive. Looking forward to it.
