we would like to spend some time camping at
steep point in May/June. my question to the experienced travellers is how bad might the wind be at that time of the year and what would be a better time?
thanks to you all for a very interesting
forum. Tom L WA

I don't think camping is allowed at
Steep Point, I think the campgrounds are a few kms away.

There are a couple of
camp sites on the
cliff top, NE side of the point, even have a drop dunny. Only reason you would
camp there rather than
Shelter Bay is if your a serious cliff/balloon fisher person.

There is a
camping area near the rangers station at
Shelter Bay which is good, but you need to book
well in advance. Another option is to stay at Tamela Station.

Tamala Station is a top spot and good staging point for the area.
Great people, great camping! Need to be fully self sufficient though.
We had a whole beach to ourselves with dolphins swimming past in the morning. Dead flat water and Ye just lay on the top and watched us as much as we watched them.

Email or call the
ranger. I booked 2 weeks ago for the 2nd week in May and got the last spot... so the windyness question might not matter if you can't get a spot anyway!

Camped on the
cliff once a long time ago (1977) on a west to east trip & it blu that hard I thought the paint was going to peel one of the most miserable nights camping ever, back then it was not an easy trip to the point,
Camp else where

G,day Tom, May is the best time around there as it is usually calm weather (no guarantees??) I used to live and work at Useless Loop, which is nearby, for 15 years until last April. I think you have to book ahead nowadays,
steep point has a website where you can get all the info, Pam and Dicko (the grumpy one) are the Rangers there.
Hope you enjoy it there.
