I am travelling from
Townsville down to
Brisbane with my 4wd and since I haven't travelled this part of the country yet, I am looking for route planing advice. A friend of
mine is joining and her 4wd experience is very limited, so I would like to keep it to recovery-free tracks and as scenic as possible as she can't help and we are one vehicle only. We will be camping in my rooftop tent along the way.
At the moment the idea is like this...
14.04.
Townsville
15. Magnetic
16. Magnetic
17. Magnetic > Alva
18. Yongala Dive >
Eungella NP
19.
Cape Palmerston
20. Keppel Island or Yeppon
21. Agnes Water/1770
22. Hervey Bay > Fraser
23. Fraser
24. Fraser
25. Fraser
26. Noosa
27. Noosa
28.
Brisbane
I heard of some good tracks around Mackay and Yeppon and a beach route from
Inskip Point to Noosa.
What other
places and tracks can you recommend?
Thanks for the advice.

When coming down through
Gin Gin you could take a side trip west to Mt Perry (bitumen) and just before Mt Perry there is the Boolboonda Rail tunnel. Short dirt road takes you through the tunnel and back onto the Mt Perry rd.
Well signposted when coming from
Gin Gin

Going south about 15k south of Bloomsbury turn right to Cathu
State forest and follow that up the mountain. It is a nice run and a good view.

At Nambour turn up towards Montville, Maleny and come down at further along. Great view over the Sunshine Coast as
well as all the Glass House Mts. (In a clear day)..

You come down o Mapleton at the bottom of the range. All sealed roads.

Told you that I was having some senior's moments. Where I said Mapleton- that I up the range. The town at the bottom is Landsborough. Realised my stupid comment this afternoon as we drove past Landsborough.

Eungella is good, especially on a hot day.
Byfield, north of
Yeppoon too.
Burrum Heads area, and Hervey Bay........if you like coffee, and crowds.
Childers is a great place to pull up for a while. Agree on Maleny area, some magic scenery there when the weather is good.

Hi PGU,
Bowen is a nice spot, the Bruce Highway used to pass through but it is along time since I lived there so not sure if it has been bypassed. Queens Beach at
Bowen is nice as is
Horseshoe Bay. Happy travels. Cheers Robyn

Agree on all the other comments but I personally wouldn't bother deviating to
Yeppoon. Not a hell of a lot to see there but I would suggest going through Tannum Sands area and yeah 1770/Agnes and then through Hervey Bay - Fraser etc & out to Maleny & so
forth.

Don't forget to get the relevent permits for the
beach drive south from
Rainbow to Noosa & also Fraser.
Rainbow to Noosa is a good easy drive. I was there over
Easter, mostly in 2WD. Even coming up off
the beach through the "soft stuff" was 2WD.
The northern end,
Rainbow to Double Is Point, can only be traversed up to a few hrs either side of high tide, unless you don't mind driving through the waves. High tide comes right up to the base of the sand cliffs along that section.

I also forgot to mention 5 rocks north of
Yeppoon and out from
Byfield. it ids s good trip across the and dunes to 5 rocks and there is some good coast line.
I don't know what the track is like after Marcia. If you do decide to go that way see the info centre in
Yeppoon as they used to have a mud map. The area around
Byfield is also good to explore but I think all the trees will be stripped bare.
Also walk up the
hill behind Rosslyn Bay harbour and also walk over to
the beach under that
hill.
