Karratha is a regional centre in the
Pilbara supporting local industries, most notably mining. Established in the late 1960s on the back of the iron-ore industry, it was a town developed to service workers.
Rio Tinto operates iron ore extraction, but there is also sea-salt mining, and ammonia exports. The North West Shelf Naturas Gas Project operates an LNG facility and export facility.
The annual FeNaCING festival is held in August.
