If you arrive here at the end of a
Gibb River Road trek a few days recovery will be in order. A soothing sunset at the jetty or just relaxing at the caravan park will have you revived.
As a service town
Derby offers all the amenities. It has
recreation facilities including a swimming
pool, library,
art gallery, ovals and courts for football, cricket, tennis, squash, netball, basketball, rodeo and horse riding plus a nine hole grassed golf course.
A good selection of shopping is available with two large supermarkets, clothing and furniture shops, newsagency, electrical goods, chemist, hotels and restaurants/cafes.
The current
Derby wharf - an unusual and memorable horseshoe shape - was built in the mid to late 1960’s and upgraded to service the early pastoralists of the region. Located five kilometres from the town centre, the jetty allows people to witness
Derby’s extraordinary 12m tide variation – the biggest tides in the southern hemisphere. The jetty is open free of charge to residents and visitors alike, and is a popular spot for watching the sunset, fishing or enjoying the cool sea breezes in the midst of the hot season. Note that the
Derby Jetty is closed to vehicles from 5pm to 6am.
See the
Derby Visitor Centre at 30
Loch Street for further information.
