For most of the year the tidal range is insufficient for the daily high tides to cover the dry and wide mudflats on either side of the road to the jetty. Once at the jetty, park your vehicle and take the round trip walkway around the jetty area and enjoy a refreshment at the cafe. Or drop in a line and join the locals.
King Sound acts as a funnel on the sea producing massive and fast moving tides. The tidal range can exceed 12 metres. On May 27th 2013 a height of 11.61 m was reached at 1515 hours on a pleasant afternoon. The water surged in under
the wharf piers and sent the mudskippers scurrying at the
boat ramp. Most interestingly, the sea began moving inland towards town, covering the dry mudflats at a slow walking pace.
In 2015 on Mon 23rd March the high tide will reach 12.26m at 1556 hours. This is the highest for the year but before the tourist season. April 21st at 12.04m/1501hrs is next. Oct 2nd at 11.86m is at an early 0409hrs. The days on either side will be almost as high.
