The
Point Sinclair Campground (or
Cactus Beach Campground) is set amongst the dune scrub, between the road and
Cactus beach. Facilities are certainly basic but the place has a unique appeal and is a great spot for a 1-2 night visit to the area.
Camping is restricted to designated
camp sites and dogs are permitted on a leash when in the
camp ground. Limited supplies of
bore water are available for showers but visitors will need to bring their own
drinking water. Within the
camp ground are a number of on-site caravans however visitors should be aware that there are no powered sites at
Point Sinclair. During summer month temperatures can and do rise to above 40 degrees Celsius.
This whole area is protected under the Sth Aust Govt
Heritage Agreement as a Coastal Protection Reserve. The
campground is a privately owned and operated property of 550 hectares and the owner – Ron Gates arrived at this area in the mid 1970's and stayed on, eventually buying the property in 1986. Ron will come around daily to collect camping fees and if you're lucky you'll get a story out of him. There are also a number of permanent residences for other long-term surfers. It's somewhat it's own community.
You'll find the ½ walled pit
toilets lined with garbage bags are meticulously cleaned and changed daily. There are also stone and wood wind breaks that surround fire
places – with the firewood delivered as needed by Ron, although since it is scare in this area, it is polite to bring your own, or contribute.
Be sure to ring to
check availability if you intend camping before you make the drive.
