Barcaldine, also known as the Garden City of The West, was established in November 1886. In 1891 'The Great Shearer’s Strike' took place under a large
ghost gum in the center of town. This site became known as the Tree of Knowledge and led to the start of the Australian Labour Party. Unfortunately the
ghost gum was poisoned in May 2006 and never recovered. Today the site houses an architecturally designed memorial, which was officially opened on the 2nd May 2009.There is plenty to see in
Barcaldine. Take a stroll along the Main street and take in the Tree of Knowledge site. Then visit the Australian Workers
Heritage Centre and the Historical Museum. The town also comes alive on the May Day long weekend every year when they have the Tree Of Knowledge Festival.August 2024 - Nice stay right along the main road - not too noisy over night. Plenty of drive through sites. Facilities require a little attention but very useable. Grounds not fenced with access directly to surrounds.
