Whau Whau
Well is situated on the Gary Highway some 56 km north of the Talawana
Track intersection and 240 kilometres north of
Everard Junction (
Intersection of the Gary and Gunbarrel Highways). It is 83 kilometres south of
Gary Junction (
Gary Junction Road intersection). Whau Whau also sits at the
intersection of the access track to Veevers meteorite carter which is 16 kilometres to the north east.
The
well was spudded on the 29th April 1970 and capped once the drill team had finished. One sleeved
bore remains with its capped poly-pipe
bore casing visible. There is a second hole nearby that is flush with the ground and covered by a piece of steel plate. There is a hand stamped
plaque mounted on a picket nearby that lists a bit of detail and lists the names of the drill team involved. The water is not that far below the surface so it could provide water if you were carrying a
bore dropper and plenty of rope. There is no hand-pump.
There are some
great camps sites amongst the eucalypts a few hundred metres east of Whau Whau, just head a hundred metres towards Veevers and then veer right into the scrub. The
camp areas are self evident.
