Woodarra was surveyed in March 1897 taking its name from that given by local Aborigines to the nearby
granite rocks from which most residents drew their water. Throughout its life, the town was more commonly referred to as Darlot. The Woodarra Hotel was the last public facility to close in the area in the 1930s and the last residents, Mr & Mrs
Watson left in 1952.
Not much remains of this former townsite. The abandoned gold mining town had its heyday in the 1890s with more than 1500 men living here.
The signage is good and tells the story of this stop on the
Darlot Loop trail.
