Major Thomas
Mitchell surveyed and recommended a road to be built up the eastern escarpment of the Blue Mountains.
Mitchell wanted to build a strong and durable stone
bridge which could withstand fire and flood, the destroyers of so many wooden structures in the colony. Unfortunately there were no suitable and highly skilled people thought to be in Australia. Luck would have it that a chance meeting with
Mitchell and Scottish immigrant and master stone mason David Lennox began. After arriving in
Sydney in June 1832, Lennox was currently working on a stone wall for the Legislative Council Chambers in Macquarie Street,
Sydney. Lennox had 20 years experience and decided to join Thomas
Mitchell to plan, design and build the Lennox
Bridge which was completed in 1833.
