The tranquil and charming township of Jericho is situated on the banks of the Jordan River, south of Lake Galilee.
Jericho has a
population of less than 200 people and located on the Capricorn Highway 221 km west of
Emerald, 83 km east of
Barcaldine The area around Jericho was first explored by Europeans when Major Thomas
Mitchell passed through the area in 1846. By the 1850s settlers had moved in.
Jericho Drive-In Theatre,
Darwin Street, Jericho with about 12 points is probably the smallest Drive In in Australia and is still operating
Jericho Shire is located in central Queensland and covers an area of 21,877 km2 with a total
population of 1103 (2002 ABS). The
population is spread between
Alpha, Jericho and many grazing properties within the Shire.The major industry within the Shire is beef production but the Shire has the potential to be opened up for mining or for a number of other economic ventures. The Shire of Jericho is a modern rural region with a great climate, good soils and many modern facilities. Jericho also has a number of interesting and colourful murals painted by local residents. One of the most popular is the two goannas having a beer in
Darwin Street.

Redbank Park is a great place to bush walk, bird watch and fish. There is a marked bush walking track that follows the river for two kilometres.
