Fountain Springs is very picturesque place with a permanent water source bubbling up through the quartzite fault line. On the traditional country of the Kalkadoon people it is a place cultural and spiritual significance dating back tens of thousands of years.
It is a popular swimming and
picnic area and the scenery surrounding
the springs is spectacular. A towering
rock face of quartzite with a split through its middle (fault line) visible points to the location of the
waterhole. Fountain Springs is also famously featured in the Crocodile Dundee movie scene where the character Sue
Charlton played by Linda Kozlowski’s is nearly grabbed by a crocodile.
There are two access options from
Mount Isa, one of which is extremely rugged and requires a fully equipped four wheel drive.
1. 4WD route: travel from Mt Isa past Mt. Frosty to the Maltese Cross site via the rough 4wd track. From Wee Macgregor, the road over the range is very very rough and meets the Fountain Springs road a couple of kilometres north of Ballara. The section through the tunnel is extremely rough.
2. The easy way in is via the Fountain Springs Rd (access off the Barkly Hwy). Travel 27km.
