Situated just before you reach the small town the
St Lawrence Recreation Grounds is capable of accommodating a lot of caravans and motor homes on a solid sandy surface with much of the area quite flat and a bit of shade on some parts. Maximum stay of 14 consecutive nights.
Facilities include
Toilets, Showers, barbecues, picnic tables and caravan
dump point. The area is provided by the local municipality and payment can be made by either calling Council during business hours or over the counter at Council offices during business hours.
The main north railway passes near by so be prepared for some noise from rather long goods trains.
It is recommended travellers fill their vans prior to arrival at
St Lawrence, as currently there is no potable water available for filling caravans.
Water available for drinking, showering and cooking.
The
St Lawrence Wetlands, freshwater fish habitats and abundant bird life are the major attractions for many visitors and locals to the area.
The town was originally built to service the customs office for the Port of
St Lawrence.
One historical building still remaining from this time is the Council office on Macartney Street.
The remains of the port and abattoir constructed using convict labour are also accessible.
The courthouse and police station were built in 1879 and has been repainted in its original colour scheme.
Railway building was recently restored to house the
St Lawrence library. Internet access is available from this centre for use by the local community and visitors.
