Information

Currawinya National Park offers shady areas beside a number of waterholes along the Paroo River, where you can go camping, swimming, fishing, canoeing, birdwatching and bushwalking. Camping is not permitted at Currawinya's lakes Numalla and Wyara as they are breeding and refuge sites for a significant variety of waterbirds and wildlife.

Lake Numalla is a permanent (usually) fresh water feature feeding from the Paroo River. Lake Wyara is a saline lake few kilometres west, and regularly dries out to become a claypan. Each lake supports different bird communities at different times. Fishing, canoeing, kayaking and swimming are permitted in sign-posted areas on Lake Numalla - no powered vessels permitted.

Access to the lakes, north west of the QPWS Headquarters near Ourimperee Waterhole, is recommended by 4WD in dry weather only. The round trip is 85km. The closest campsites are along Ourimperee Waterhole.

These campsites are open areas, many shaded, without separately defined sites. Facilities include cold bush showers, flushing toilets nearby at the woolshed. Generators are prohibited but open fires are permitted (except when fire bans apply). Bring your own untreated, clean mill off-cuts (i.e. no nails, screws, chemically treated stuff, etc.) for firewood or better still, use a fuel stove. Local water is NOT suitable for drinking. Bring rubbish bags, and take all recyclables and rubbish with you when you leave. Bins are not provided. There is no mobile phone coverage and visitors must book or self-register and pay before setting up camp. The current overnight camping fee is $5.45/person/night (Oct 2013). See website for all details.
