The
dam was purpose-built in 1983 to provide a
water supply to the Tarong Power Station. This
Dam and accommodation facilities has been developed into a regional
recreation area where the fishing is excellent and amenities second to none. Fingerlings are released annually into the
dam, with main species being golden perch (yellowbelly), silver perch and Australian bass. Boondooma
Dam is a popular fishing destination due to the varied methods available from bait and lure fishing and deep fly tactics. Boondooma
Dam is considered one of the most consistent
inland fishing spots in Queensland. Numerous Yellowbelly and Australian Bass Fishing Competitions are held at the
dam each year. A stock impoundment permit is needed to fish.
