Lake Francis is really a
billabong, or deep hole, in the Georgina River just a few kilometres West of
Camooweal, over the
bridge, then turning South off the
Barkly Highway along the riverbank. It has abundant birdlife, and lilies add colour to the Lake. There are several shaded campsites suitable for CamperTrailers and Caravans. Locals report that there are fish and yabbies in the Lake. Campers need to be totally self sufficient as there are no facilities (toilets/potable water etc.) in the area.
A small general store/PostOffice, and Hotel is located in the township. The Drovers Association to the East of
Camooweal has a museum of sorts which is
well worth a visit, particularly if interested in cattlemen and drovers in Western Queensland.
