Stockyard Gully National Park is three hours northeast of
Perth. It is 4WD accessible only.
This reserve protects a
cave system formed by a river that flows through a
limestone tunnel. These caves were once part of the old North Stock Route used by Stockmen from 1850’s - 1925. The stockmen used the deep and cool gullies as a holding pen for their cattle on the way from
Geraldton to
Perth for market.
The caves would offer them a natural ravine and and safe, refreshing place to
camp.
Day visitors are welcome to visit and enter these caves. There is no charge to enter but there is no overnight camping permitted anywhere in the reserve.
The caves can be approached from the Northern end via Pearson’s Track (only for experienced 4WDrivers as this track is very rough), or from the southern end via Cockleshell Gully Road. If approaching from the southern end along the Cockleshell Gully Road, you will still need 4WD for the final 5km of this track which becomes narrow, and sandy, and is interspersed with
limestone outcrops. Take extreme care for returning traffic.
Please note: there is no camping allowed anywhere within this reserve and pets are not allowed.
