Broad Sound Fish Habitat consists of 170,330 hectare of the Broad Sound and adjoining estuarine systems, 125 km SE of Mackay. Consisting of Extensive mangroves and salt marshes around estuary; mangrove-lined creeks and seagrass beds; high tidal range with extensive inter tidal areas exposed at low tide.
Originally declared on the 20 November 1986, re-declared on 30 November 1995 (with boundary modifications), and again on 28 March 2008. The Habitat is part of Isaac Regional Council /
Rockhampton Regional Council.
The Broad Sound Fish Habitat is the QLD State’s largest declared Fish Habitat Area for Conservation of commercial and recreational fishing grounds; protection of dugong habitat as
well as key fish habitats:
Barramundi, blue salmon, bream, estuary cod, flathead,
grey mackerel, grunter,
mangrove jack, queen-fish, sea
mullet, school mackerel, whiting, banana prawns, mud crab.
The habitat is also a key area to a number of bird species, including the Great Knot (migrates from
Siberia annualy) and the Yellow Chat.
