The Howard Springs Hunting Reserve protects a large part of the Howard River and has virgin areas of rainforest, stringybark, woollybutt and ironwood trees.
A variety of birdlife can be seen all year round, including whistling duck, brolga,
rainbow pita and
orange-footed scrubfowl.
During waterfowl hunting season approved species of duck, including magpie geese may be hunted with a permit.
Fishing can be very successful at the river.
There are saltwater crocodiles in all waterways in Howard Springs Hunting Reserve. Do not swim and Be Crocwise at all times.
