As for a number of small towns of the Indian Ocean Drive,
Ledge Point was eastablished to service the crayfishing industry. The town's name arises from a nearby coastal feature of the same name, a series of rocky ledges on the point. In the early '50's a nunber of squatters
shacks were developed by commercial fishers, with demand for land quickly leading to the gazetting of a formal townsite in 1955. Currently, as
well as continuing to support the fishers, Ledge is also now
home to retirees and holiday homes. It has a number of small shops and cafes, making it a pleasant spot, just off the IOD, to relax for an hour or so. Accommodation is available.
The famous Vergulde Draek (Gilt Dragon) Dutch East India Company treasure ship was discovered off the coast hereabouts in the early 70's. More recently, the Oil Rig, Key Biscayne 'beached' 20 Km's offshore here in 50 metres of water, now giving rise to a popular though challenging dive wreck.
From a recreational point of view Ledge has a great hard beach, suitable for boat launching, excellent 4WD'ing, swimming, fishing, and snorkelling. There are also tracks running parallel to
the beach in both directions.
